Will a 90hp do the job?

Looking at a 20' Bennington with a 90hp Honda (new), will it be enough to pull the grandkids on a tube?

Yes - it should do 30mph+ I own a 24ft with 90hp Suzuki, and have owned several pontoons for our lake.

    agreed

toons displace water, to get up and plane requires gross hp

No way that will run 30mph....23-25 mph is more reasonable.

We had a Harris 200 Cruiser with a 4S Merc 115, 23 tops with three to four onboard and a large tube with a few kids.

My Lowes SS 210s will run 30 with a 115 command thrust, lifting strakes, and full underskin. Little better with good prop. This is a pontoon not tritoon. With family of 5 about 27.

Pontons are displacement hulls. They push water instead of ride on top. Adding more hp doesnt translate into big speed gains. Usually you are looking at low 20s for speed.

To get more speed out of a toon you have to make is a planing hull. You haveto lift it out of the water. This is accomplished with lifting strakes. Another thing is playing with the center toon. Some use a larger center toon or mounting it lover in effect mimicing a v hull.

Standard pontoons are slow and not nimble.

Go ahead and get a deck boat. Pretty much like a pontoon but with an actual hull. So you keep the space and also get better performance just won’t ride as smooth in rough waters but won’t be far off either

I have a 2020 22' Misty Harbor tritoon with a 140hp Suzuki 4 stroke. It will do 38 with perfect conditions. Now put the bimi top up and add a couple of adults and 4 grandkids (total of 8) and she will do 28mph. Put a tube behind it and really feel the pull but it still performs well. Switch to knee boards and its fine for non aggressive borders.
My opinion is 140/150hp is minimum
I told my wife if anything happens to my 150 yamaha on the bass boat, I'm taking the 140 Suziki and buying a bigger outboard for the Misty Harbor
