    used boat registration question

I bought a 97 Ranger for 5k last year and I am getting ready to renew the registration and the price is $130. That seems really high to me. The BMV told me they base the price on the value of the boat when it was new. Is this right?

Sounds about right. They do the same with cars.

I've got a 20ft 1988 Skeeter and the registration was $85.00 and trailer tags $40.00. Not sure if they go by value or by the foot.

Seems like my 02 Ranger 185VS $85 a year since it was new, but that includes a "Lake Enhancement" fee Then about $40 for the trailer.

My 2004 Stratos is $60 and trailer is $33.50.

That seems really high for a ‘97

Based on the value when new.
Your going to take a hit the first time you register, should go down
    after that.
But at some point, it ($$) levels off, and it will be the same every year.

When I bought my new boat in 2014 I was told it was based on new value. Then it drops every year for 10 years. After ten years, the taxes are half of what they were when new and the taxes stay at that level. I don't know how it works for used boats.
