    What should I have done?

Partly cloudy skies, post frontal conditions. Throwing a natural shad colored Rattle Trap. I could see bass swiping at the lure close to the boat, but they wouldn't commit to it. I then switched over to a Chrome and blue Trap, but never saw another or had a bite. What should I have done?

I would have tried a vibrating jig. To me, a Rat-L-Trap and vibrating jig are baits that compliment each other.

    Try a different color trap.

You might try changing speed of retrieve. But if that didn't work, a blade jig or big 2 colorado bladed spinnnerbit. A lot of guys don't throw the spinnerbait because of the bladed jig's popularity but it still works.

And a trick worm rigged wacky style worked slowly might have worked.

I would have gone with something obnoxious like a clown colored jerkbait. Especially this time of year

Depending on your depth, if less than 10’, I would have switch over to a finesse type lure. Then again I may have thrown a 3/8oz. Spinnerbait and slow rolled it.

Jerkbait is what I would've tried.

Then again, I probably wouldn't have been throwing a trap in the first place. I really need to get better at fishing a lipless...

I’d definitely had a rattletrap, jerkbait and chatterbait on stand by. Depending on the water and structure, I have a few different techniques for a jignpig including swimming one which has worked quite well in that condition.

Probably a 3.3-3.8 swimbait depending on water clarity

I would have slowed down with jerkbait or fluke but that's dependent on water clarity.

Jerkbait, hart or soft. The sudden stop without sinking can make them bite.

X2 and maybe change your retrieve from steady to include a pause here and there. I've seen them follow and not commit but when it starts to drop they will often hit it..

A bait you can pause and it will rise and slowly work that last 15’ back in
stop and go trying to get a follower to commit
