just got a used Ranger on a Ranger Trail trailer it pulls straight and fine until getting over 70 mph then the trailer wants to sway side to side. Trailer is level with the hitch. What could cause this swaying?

Just guessing but I’d check would be the hub bearings and the tires? Maybe have some broken cords causing it?

I'd check the tongue weight to make sure it is heavy enough for high speeds. It's possible that the high speed air is lifting the bow of the boat enough to reduce the tongue weight.

I had 18' Tri Hull back in the 90's that did the same thing. I was pulling the boat with a 1979 Blazer with a 3" lift and it had 8" wide stock rims with 285 size tires. The problem was that the sidewalls of the truck tires were flexing/swaying at higher speeds due to the weight of the boat. Went to a 10" wide rim with 33" BF Goodrich All Terrain Radials and solve the problem. Also could be low tire pressure on the truck or trailer. Just something to check. Good luck and Tight Lines...

On my 1985 single axle Ranger Trail - essentially the same trailer that they carried well in to the 2000s, it has much more of a tendency to sway over 70mph. I rarely travel the interstate with it, so it is not an issue for me.
If I want to travel more, I'll just have to move the bow roller/post up a few inches. I'm sure after someone put the 6" jack plate on, everything changed.

Does it have a Jack Plate or Power Poles/Talons ? Could be the additional weight behind the axle. First make sure the Hitch is level or just slightly below. Then make sure the tire pressure is full. If you have an adjustable wench post, you can move it forward before you load the boat next time. Sway can be caused by all kinds of different issues. BUT, speed will ENHANCE the problem.

6 in jack plate, no poles. winch post cannot be moved forward, swing tongue and post mount is as far forward as it can go. Tires at 50psi, and trailer is level with hitch.

Not to derail the post but could you elaborate a little on the P tire comment?
Too light on ply number or load capacity?
Too soft of side wall support compared to LT tire?
You have got to be aware that not all trailer tires are equal. Unless you buy higher end tires rated for faster highway speeds you may risk tire failure. Many of the trailer tires in use are rated for a maximum 75mph and to consistantly exceed that speed may result in ply separation and failure.

Agree with the tongue weight. Need 5-10% of the total trailer weight on the tongue.
I'd say if you can lift the tongue by hand, your tongue load is too light. Sure you can weigh it, just suggesting a starting point as most men can probably get a 250-300 lb to at least start coming off the ground while on the jack stand. If you can't budge it by hand, your tongue weight may not be your issue.
