Medium plugs were perfect. Boat jumps up with no blowing out.

Been drilling out those holes for years and it works. I use a step bit for the holes.

Ok. New problems. Still dont have a jackplate. Wife, brother and I fished Dunns creek today. A lot of twists and turns. When the boat was up on pad with the extra person, it felt like we were hitting little pockets of air and the prop would slip for a brief second, then bite. This went on off and on all day. Also, I would have to slow down quite a bit in the turns because the boat would slide. But, when I would trim down and slow down, the boat would bite and want to turn hard. It seemed like I had to do some serious steering corrections to keep it under control. Any ideas?

Im assuming the "pockets of air" were dirty water coming off of the bottom of the boat.

That boat is a slider, you're not doing anything wrong, it's just a little lacking in the handling department, very common on every Roark Summerford hull ever built.

So what you are saying is that we need to embrace the "suck"? Or only go straight?.....haha

What about the cavitation I was getting? Will extra weight in the boat make dirtier water behind the boat?

Pretty normal on that hull. I'm not going to call anyone's baby ugly, but that boat has never been known for it's turning abilities. More seat time will get you to know your limitations. You can get some more cup added to the prop, up to a point that'll help the cavitation, and more good news, when you add the plate, it's going to get more slippery.

You'll learn where your best trim and throttle positions are as you go along.

Well schmidt....Im finding out, the better I get a driving it, the more little things I dont like about it. Is there anything that will help improve the leaning to the left at slower speeds and lower trim angles off the pad? I feel like I dont have a medium speed. Its all or nothing with this thing.

Man, I hate to be the buzz kill in this party. The correct answer is not really, your hull is a early generation Stratos, they used the molds and stuck the hydra sport stickers on them. Everything you are experiencing is exactly the same thing a stratos guy got three years earlier.

If it makes you feel any better, there's far worse hulls out there....

Well sir, Id rather you be honest than sugar coat. I didnt spend a ton of money on the boat. But, it IS in very good shape. I do want it to perform to the best of its ability, and when I outgrow it, which seems to be happening pretty quickly, Ill know what to look for next time.

I do have more questions about motor height, though. If I am at 4.5 now, and still having to trim up a lot to get max rpm and speed; in theory, I should be able to go up to the last hole and trim less to achieve the same results, correct?

My concern is getting more ventilation than I already have when loaded. But, if I don't have to trim as much, that should help in the ventilation dept.?

I know you guys have told me a jackplate will help. But, in light of all of the new information, Im not sure I want to spend another 1500 on a hyd jack plate. But, if you think it will make a sufficient difference, I will go ahead and order one. I plan to send my prop off here pretty quickly as well.

In the mean time, I thought I would play with the motor height. But, if you don't think it will make a difference in handling, I will wait.

    Remain calm.
Boat setup and performance is very much subject to opinion, what you like, I hate, so it's all about what you're willing to compromise on to get exactly what you want. And it's going to be a series of compromises.

First, understand the basics of cause and effect of motor height:
Too high: Prop cavitates, lack of lift, boat runs flat. Big roostertail, anything above the motor cowling is wasting a lot of energy. Steering is way too stiff at speed. Prop slip is running off the chart, way too many rpms for speed achieved.
Too low: No/very small tail. Steering is just numb. RPM's/Speed not achieved. Boat is loose and flighty/chine walks quickly.

So, right now your symptoms are you're right on the edge of too high, raising it more will make it cavitate more. The problem arises when you try to make a move without a plate, it's usually too much. 1/4" can be the difference, and that's not going to happen when you have 1 1/4" between mounting holes.

A manual plate will help get what you need just fine, a rapid jack 6" plate would be just the ticket. They make the best manual plate, easy to adjust and have never seen one fail. There are some junk plates out there, not to be used EVER, like a rite hite.

I definitely like the price of the manual jack. I took a look at the rapid jack last week. I was stuck on the hyd jack after watching videos about lowering motor in rough water and raising for speed, etc.

I've run both, I was glad I had the hydraulic twice. In twenty two years. When I didn't have it, I didn't miss it.

Fishermen are all crows, we like new and shiny, if it's expensive then it must be worth it. How can we ever expect to catch a fish without a $400 dollar rod and $600 reel and a $80,000 boat? Just not possible.

Took boat out today with light load, half a tank of fuel, me 210and daughter 120. Completely different animal. No lean to the left at all. Good holeshot. Still feels like prop slips on and off until I get completely up on the pad. Like just running down the lake at 3500rpm and 35 mph, you can feel it intermittently slip and grab. Its not bad, but definitely noticeable. It almost feels like the hub is spun when it does it. Once I get on it and get up on the pad, it doesnt happen at all. I still have to trim all the way up, to hit 5500. Good rooster, maybe just a little over the cowl.

I may be wrong, but I feel like it def needs more lift at lower rpm.

Ill be getting that jack plate this coming week.

Received the hydro-dynamics today. Gonna try to get it on this week and test sat morning.

Im having a very weird trim issue, tho, and the guys in the Evinrude forum seem to be stumped. Anyone know anything about Fastrac trim systems? Or point me to a guru?

Been talking with him some. They seem to be stumped. Boat doesnt wanna trim down while up on pad at max speed. Have to let off throttle and it will start trimming down. Works good any and all other speeds, etc. Only does it every 1 out of 4 or 5 runs. Probably gonna end up taking it apart and rebuilding.

Will install jack plate hopefully this weekend and be back with more ??? Im sure.

    Thanks!
