Hydrasports 185 DC with 175 Intruder

Good morning guys. First post. Have been reading a lot about setups on here.

I have a 97 HydraSports 185 DC with a 175 intruder that I picked up last week. We ran it on the lake last week before I bought it, and it ran well.
Lake was calm and was me 215 and an old man 150. It is immaculate on the bottom. Not even a chip. Had full load of fuel, and 3 batteries in back. It came out of the hole well, but had a little chine walk on top end. I went ahead and purchased it thinking it just needed some setup work.

Yesterday, my brother and I took it out to mess around. My brother is about 220 and I at 215. There was a good chop yesterday as well. The boat comes out of the hole well, but once it planes, seems like there is a a little drag and vibration until I get it trimmed up to where it likes. We were capable of getting 55mph at 5500 rpm working the trim, but I could hear the prop ventilating at anything past that, or a slight turn. It also seemed like once it started ventilating, I couldnt get it to "grab" by just trimming down. I would have to slow the boat down and start over. The water pressure stayed good the whole time.

The prop centerline is 4.5 below the bottom of the boat, and I only have one more hole to go up. But I worry that going up another hole will make it ventilate worse. The prop is a stainless michigan wheel 14.25 x 25. Doing some reading, I know these props aren't the best out there, and I figure this is where the vibes are coming from.

I will be doing a compression test today just to be sure the engine is healthy. My problem is that I don't know what I should expect from the boat/motor combo as far as speed.

Will raising the motor make it ventilate worse?
Can I benefit from a jackplate with good setback?
Is the 25 michigan wheel doing me justice? I see a lot of setups on here with 24 Raker.

Thanks for any info that you guys can give. I will have compression numbers this evening.

There is another thread on here recently about that same rig,you might get some ideas from that.. As for your questions, raising the engine will make it vent/slip worse. Those hulls definitely need a 6” jackplate, set it at about 3.5” under to start and see if you can go up any. That’s not a great prop for performance,a Renegade 25 runs pretty good on those boats but a Raker 24 should be a little faster. I never tried one but I suspect that a Mercury Tempest+ would run good too, hubbed to fit your engine. While you’re at it,check your carburetors closely, they have plastic bowls and they warp over time causing a leak and performance problems

Prop is a turd, if you go raker, they are usually turds out of the box, but a professional can make them run very good.

Just got home and did compression test. 115-120 on all 6. Plugs looked good. Took a look at the carb float bowls. They all have oil residue, so I will order new bowls. Im sure some of it is from tilting the motor, but better safe than sorry.

My plan is to order a bobs hyd plate with 6inch setback and the 24 raker unless anyone objects.

I did speak to a few prop guys today that say they can balance and tweak the raker. Do you guys have any suggestions on who I should use?

One last question after looking at props and guys who "work" props. Would it be better to buy a prop from Mark instead of going Raker HO out of the box?

    Thanks Guys!

Update...Wasn't able to talk to Mark. Im sure he is busy. I did speak to the guys at Steve's and they talked me into a 24P tempest. Should be here Sat with hub. Haven't sprung for the jack plate yet. Plan to run the tempest Sat eve and see what happens.

You'll see a big change, the big difference when you add the plate is when you're loaded to fish.

Ran the 24 Tempest today....all I can say is HOLY CHIT! I could tell a difference as soon as I put it in reverse! It immediately jumped out of the hole and never stopped pulling. Before I knew it we were at 64 and still climbing. Water was pretty choppy and lot of boats, so I made 2 short runs and called it.

One thing I noticed, and Im chalking some of it up to time behind the wheel and learning curve on the new prop, but if I let off of the throttle too quickly, it gets super squirrely in the ass end. Is this due to improper setup or needing to trim down more before letting off of throttle? Boat is still set at 4.5 inches. Can only go up one more hole without adding the jack plate. The steering felt well throughout the runs, but I didnt give it much imput when we were at speed.

    Thanks!

It's nose hook from cutting the throttle too quick without trimming down some first.

Alright fellas. Took the boat out this am and had good water conditions to run the boat after doing a little fishing.

Started with a full load of fuel, 30 gallons and fishing gear. Had my wife and brother with me this am. Boat did good on top end. Still seems pretty squirrelly at top speed. Seeing 62 or 63 at 5500 with 3 people. I believe it would actually keep climbing in speed, but I let off because I keep feeling its a little unstable. Just seems to be all over the place and not a solid ride.

My biggest problem at this point is that the prop keeps blowing out when the boat breaks over if I stand on the throttle. That is with the trim all the way tucked. Basically, I have to feather the hot foot to get the boat up on plane, then it takes off. But, it jumps right up, then as soon as the bow breaks over, it blows out. Motor too high? Still at 4.5".

On another note the vent plugs in the prop have fairly large holes. Was gonna pick up some smaller ones and try those. But Im skeptical because the boat pulls real good until it breaks over.

    Any suggestions?

Your vent holes will stop the cavitation. You just restrict the gas flow until it stops blowing out and you're done.
Loose is fast, stuck to the water is not.

You won't need solid plugs in a tempest prop probably mediums at best and they still blow out at break over you just need to learn to peddle it when it breaks over to stop it.
