My Dad was, he was born in 1921.
I've heard alot of stories from when he was growing up. My grandfather was a farmer, and they had a big garden also. They didn't have a lot, but they didn't go hungry. It took WWII to pull the country out of the depression.

Naw, my mom told me her family didn’t even know it was happening. Raised everything except sugar and coffee. Grandpa was a blacksmith and a model T mechanic. Worked part time driving a road grader. Mom lived to 95 and only about two years of that she didn’t raise a big garden. People who had money before the crash were the ones who felt it worse. Think they farmed 260 acres. Mother had my oldest sister at home and was back picking cotton in a few days. People then were Tufffff
My grandfather. Still alive and well. Doesn't talk about it much but he was just a child. He has been very frugal his entire life because of it. Won't eat chicken to this day because it was his job to kill the chickens. I believe it was hard times we can't even imagine.
My Mom and Dad lived through it... They were definitely scared by it... Dan

Exact same thing my Dad told me. Rural people in the south east were in a continous depression from 1865 until the end of the 1940's. It was the city people that suffered during the depression. today's population is almost completely city or urban. It will hurt a lot more this time.

It does matter what criteria you use for the definition of the time period. So there could be some interpretation involved. Some historians claim it lasted until 1941 in that it took a war to get us out of depression. Regardless of what criteria is used the 1930's was tough for urban people.
