Question Gel coat peeled off on transom

The bottom of my transom has lost the gel coat? I was looking at the bottom of transom and saw a large chunk of what looks like gel coat missing. This is almost from port to starboard and some gel is still attached but not to the fiberglass any idea how this happened? I was thinking that over the winter water in the transom froze and expanded and the gel broke loose. Could this be and how bad is my problem? Any way to repair?

OK Here is a picture of the lower middle of my transom. The more I look at this the more I think someone did a repair and spryed some knid of clear coat over the bottom of the transomtransom peeling.jpg

Yep coulda been sprayed with automotive clear....you should be able to see some blend lines out around the edges of this area. As far as repairing, grind out and respray. I would think flake and all would have to be done. Without really seeing it, it’s hard to say ?

Thanks Crank68 for the reply. The picture is upside down so the shiny side is the transom where the top coating has flaked off. I think all I need to do is scrap off the loose top coating and leave it.

You can probably use a razor blade and get it off. Doing that to mine now where some rocket scientist sprayed mine years ago with clear. Coming off well. Will wet sand, buff, and seal

Two days to scrape it off with razor blades. Then wet sanded through 2000 grit. Buffed. Looks great now. Well worth the work.
