    Setting up 188

Ok, I am back at it with trying to get this boat dialed in. After getting some contradicting information from various marinas on my motor I decided to call Yamaha and have them run my serial number. I have a 2003 2.6l 200 Vmax HPDI with a 1.86 gear case. They said my WOT rpms should be 5500. I ran a 24 pitch Fury 4 a couple days ago. My prop to pad was at 3 1/2”, my max speed was 64 mph via gps, 20+ lbs of water pressure, and my WOT rpms were 5600. I had 3/4 tank of fuel and half full livewells. My hole shot was around 5 seconds and I had all plugs removed. I have a 25 Tempest Plus on it’s way and am now wondering if I should have gotten a 23 instead. Is there a better option out there (25m was about impossible to find) and will 5600 blow that motor?

Your motor can run 6,000 rpms all day every day and live a very long time.
The confusion comes from the two HPDI motors, your 2.6 or a later 3.1 they are different and require different setup.

The M would have been the first choice, but the tempest will run good also. The advantage to the tempest, there are prop guys who have a ton of experience working on them, and your ability to get it dialed in to get exactly what you want will be easy to do.

Run the tempest with your regular load and spend the time getting it right, find the right height, and play with the pvs plugs to get the best holeshot you can. 67ish should be easy to find. The 2.6 just doesn't have the grunt to match the 3.1 motor so a fair comparison isn't there.

Thank you Pat, Mark Croxton is about an hour and a half away so if need be it will go to him. On the 2.6 what should I be looking at for water pressure? Also to make sure that I am understanding what you said, will I be okay running my motor above the 5500 rpm range?

Mark is the man and he can pitch that 25 down to a 24 if need be. You don't want to lug that motor (turn too big of prop).

Any rpms up to 6,000 is fine. I like to run 15 lbs of water pressure, some guys are fine with 12, but that's up to you. Your goal on the 188 is to find as much lift as you can, and that's going to mean a low, long rooster tail, steering is a bit numb, the boat will feel light and a little loose at speed.

The Yamaha 3.1 was the OX66, the EFI engine. The 200 HPDI were 2.6/3.3 litre engine. My dad had a 2006 188 with a 200 Opti (3.0) and it was a slug. It would run 64-66 on good days. Loaded with wells full and 2 guys, 63 ish.... I've yet to see a blazing stock 188/200 combo. Mid 60's is all I've ever seen/heard of. Owzakwi boats here in Kansas is very very good at getting the best out of their boats. They rigged some 188's and mid 60's was pretty much what they ran on good days. Now their 198's were different animals. Mine ran 73-74 solo....

Not to lessen anyone efforts but we had 188’s running 70 with fishing loads. Skipper Bishops would run 71 with a 3.3 HPDI without breaking a sweat. Quite a few here were familiar with that boat. The 3.0 motors were a big difference.

When I first got the boat it would get to 71. I have added poles and (3) heavy batteries now so its a 67-68 boat all day.
