How is the system? Worth the $550 price or should I go aftermarket.

I opted out of the stereo system on my new 520L. I’m getting a single console and I thought over time where the placement of the stereo deck is could become an issue. I just wasn’t sure how it would hold up to the elements over time. I’m sure they are nice and sound great. I’m going to buy a wireless speaker that I can play from my phone and save the 550. Just my opinion.
It’s a decent stereo...with an amp would be a lot better...and I wish they didn’t network it. Makes for strange off and on an cycling when you start and shutdown the big motor.
I have it on my L boat and like it. I had the Sonic hub on my last ride and it was good also. Would recommend either.

I've been pleased with mine going two years now, but I really only use the radio. Like Dean, I don't understand why it cycles on/off with every start up. Yes you can control it through your lowrance; I really like that feature.

Did the factory run the NMEA cable to the unit?

Yes it is rigged with the NEMA network and can be controlled from the Live units audio feature.
Where do they mount the speakers? 518L

I have dual console speakers are mounted one on each side.

I have it and the only drawback (other than it has a mind of its own) is that with the speakers down low the person on the back deck gets blown out compared to the front deck. Not a problem when I am by myself and it does sound good.
