    Favorite Early Spring Tactics

Typically for ice out I tend to throw jerkbaits, ned rigs, wiggle warts and finesse swimbaits but can never really get into them good. When the water temps are below 50 it seems like I’m lucky to get a limit during an 8hr trip but don’t have much confidence that time of year with throwing anything else.

what do you guys prefer to throw when the water temps are 40-45deg?

Ill be honest not worth it to me to go out w the boat in water temps below 45. I have same issue as you bites few and far between, plus have to fish so slow never been my strong suit. Way i look at it is nearest lake 1hr 20 min cost to much to take boat out for the day for a few bites.

I went to Lake Hopatcong Monday in New Jersey...Water temps were 46-47 degrees. I got 2 largemouth and 1 smallmouth all in about 3 ft of water. All 3 came from different areas of the lake and all 3 were caught on a # 5 Shad rap in orange craw color.

I never usually get out until late April early May. Tubes and Stickbaits fished SLOW!

Not a bad time to idle around and do some mapping. Was my plan until corona hit. Just bundle up.

Had one of my best days ever Easter Sun about 10 years ago on Honeyoye. Cant remember the water temp but it was early April and 36 degrees in the AM. We boasted a lot of fish, got a 5 and a 6.4 on back to back casts. Almost all fish were caught dragging a tube from shore to the boat. My son got a few and a walleye on a lipless before we figured out the tube bite.
