    HVAC, Replacing a thermostat question.

I have an home built in the 80s. It has 3 zones for heat/central air, I would like to replace the thermostat with a newer one nothing fancy just updated.

Looking at some the wire diagrams and the wires I have, it really doesn't make sense to me. Anybody know anything about this type of wiring or how I can go about to replace it.

    Thanks.

Label all the wires, new thermostats will have the same letters.

When you get the new thermostat, it will tell you were to hook up each wire. There will be several options depending on your current setup. I had to fish the main wire out of the wall and add another wire to mine and then go down to the furnace and hook it up down there as well. Took me a little bit to figure out what was wrong, but it was easy to fix.

Your going to run into some confusion I can see that , you might not need all those wires on a new stat.

haha - maybe mine was lucky but thought it would of been hard when I did it and was amazed it worked first time - the instructions were pretty good

If it’s a heat pump the wiring is a little more tricky.

I think he spends time cutting wires for new exposed copper , uses a level , the plastic anchors . . We are heating contractors .

That looks like 2 t-stat cables used as 1.

2 red, 2 white, 2 green, blue used as W2, a green used for the Reversing valve.

Look deeper into the wall, see what your dealing with.
