Current leaking to ground. First thing I would check is if there's water in the motor.

Probably some connection between TM batteries and the cranking/electronics battery. Jump start system been used? On the run charger? Noise reduction grounding?

What do you mean by noise reduction grounding?

A connection from TM negative to cranking battery negative to reduce interference in electronics.

Will this interference blow that 3amp fuses? I know when the fuse is blown when I see the interference on my DI which is sourced from the TM mounted transducer.

No. Any kind of connection between the TM battery and the battery that powers the display will blow the fuse. The fuse protects the noise reduction circuit in the TM.

Including the battery charger be sure to disconnect the trolling motor before turning on the charger

Thanks for the info. I’ll look at this stuff next week when I get back to my boat.

When you get to the boat, if you want some input, PM me and we can talk on the phone.

As Catfan (John) said, if there is any connection between cranking ground and trolling motor ground it could cause the fuse to blow. It is possible to make a connection between the two, but the connection has to be made to the trolling motor battery that carries ground to the trolling motor.

Mine has also blown the fuse twice in the last 6 months. I found a broken grounding strap on my Mercury and have been having a white powder on the skeg and edges of the trolling motor and the jack plate. Could that broken strap have caused it?

Not likely, but the white powder is a symptom of improper wiring between the battery systems that could easily cause a blown fuse.

I’ll start taking it apart tomorrow. I put a volt meter on the trolling motor plug while charging and it had 44.1 volts. That’s too high isn’t it?
    thanks.

44.1V is exactly what you’d expect it to read while charging. 14.7V*3 batteries is 44.1V. Once it finishes charging it should drop down to 39.3 to 40.2V depending on the charger and mode it’s set for.
