Motor in gear or neutral when towing

My buddy always makes sure his motor is in reverse when he tows his boat so that his prop doesn't spin. I always leave my motor in neutral. Is there a right or wrong way, or is it just personal preference?

Idk if its right or wrong but I always put mine in forward when towing also. Had a old timer tell me when I was younger I should and have always done it

Always leave mine in neutral while towing and have for the past 20 yrs. Some lower units can be damaged shifting it into gear when the motor is NOT running. If it spins in the wind it doesnt bother me in the least bit.

OK, good to know I'm not doing anything "wrong" by leaving mine in Neutral. My friend has never told me why he insists on putting his in reverse, but I think someone told him long ago that it should be done like that and he's just always done it that way.

Neutral here, following most larger hp boats the prop usually doesn’t spin.... that’s most of a 20hp Johnson thing.

Neutral, and this year I added a bright orange and reflective striped prop cover. Maybe it will save me from a texting idiot hitting the back of my boat, most likely not.

^^ wear and tear I guess.
Lots of thick gear oil in there. Not much spinning.

Don Weed mention to someone on a post to never shift your outboard unless it is running, he is the zen master and we are mere pupils.

At one time years ago it was taught to keep your small outboards (we didn't have such big ones then) in forward mainly because if you hit a bump and the lower unit hit the ground it would bounce up in forward and not as likely be damaged, but not in neutral or reverse. I don't think that is much of a concern these days.

Neutral. Your prop doesn’t spin while trailering if you leave it in neutral lol
