You stated earlier that you were getting 5800 at WOT and trimmed out... If 5500-6000 is max I would say you are either right there or could potentially drop 1 pitch.

Hopefully someone more familiar with the Optimax 90hp will chime in since I dont know what the max RPM target should be for that engine.

5800 RPM is the maxim recommended RPM for the 90 HP Optimax.

Would a 14.25" 21p stainless prop be too big?

Look into a Powertech nrs3 in about the same pitch you have now. And give these people a call. Not sure what the price is now but a couple years ago I paid way less than $300 for my 17p nrs3 and your motor probably takes the same diameter as my 75 4-stroke. I get you're on a budget but a prop is something you really want to get right on a boat. The nrs3 has really good cupping to help carry the load better. Far superior to the stock Black Max prop in handling and speed is about the same.

Make sure you get ventilation holes in the hub to help with holeshot.

How does the NRS compare to a Laser 2? I can get a new NRS 21p for $320 or a used Laser 2 for $200

No clue how they compare but the nrs has cupping on the tips and leading edge to help lift the bow and carry the load better.

What was your setup before and did you gain any speed?

I have a 115 pro xs and it had a black max 19p ..only 42mph at 6300 rpms. I tried a 21p and only gained a mph but lost some rpms. The laser 2 20p with cup added or the spitfire x7 19p were recommended here and my local prop shop recommended the nrs3 19p or ballistic 19p. The nrs3 was supposed to be like the laser 2 with cup added. The ballistic was supposed to have stern lift of an x7 withput the loss of speed. I hit 49mph with a light load the other day at 6300 rpms and and it runs 46-7 consistently with 2 people and tourney load. I did have cup added to it though to get rpms down.

Was that with a 115 Optimax pro XS or the 4 stroke pro XS? I know the 115 Optimax has a 2.07 gear ratio and the 90 HP has a 2.33 gear ratio so they can spin a slightly larger prop. Not sure what gear ratio the 115 Pro XS 4 stroke has.

Dharr, so you the smaller foot as well. What is the part number for that ballistic prop you are running? I thought they only offered the Apollo props for the 4.25 gearcase

Mine is a 115 pro xs 4 stroke- 2.07/ 4.25 6300rpm max. The part # is questionable because I didnt get a box my local prop shop had a couple people tested and traded in. I haven't tested too many props but it raised the whole boat out of the water and kept the same rpms as the aluminum prop

I will consider that but I think I need a 21 or 22" pitch based on what research I have done.
