I would guess somewhere between 13-15P Aluminum would work fine. Guessing as you didn't offer any current info on the set up.

15p will most likely be too much prop, unless that 16'er is a bath tub and nothing inside.

A 12p or 13p most likely (especially if your 40 is the 2 cylinder version and not the 3 cylinder version) ...... maybe a 14p if you're super light and the 3 cylinder version hopped up like mine.

I've played with a lot of differnt hulls with these 2 stroke 3 cylinder 40/50/60 Mercs ....... a stock 40 Merc on a 16' aluminum bass boat usually is always a 12p or 13p ..... 12p if the occupants are bigger and/or you carry alot of gear/weight.

I've had good performance out of Mercury's 4 blade aluminum Spitfire, Trophy Sport and Vengeance. Trophy Sport is usually the best top end of the 3, unless the Vengenace has been modified.

    Good Luck!

I was going to suggest a 13P Spitfire as well... Just guessing though,,, I owned a Bass Tracker 16 ft 40HP in 1980.... I think it had a 15P on it stock, But ran a lot better with a 13P. Knowing what I know now, I should have tried a load pushing prop. Like what pontoon boats run... Large diameter, less pitch. The spitfire has more blade area and cup than a standard 3 blade.

Mike, I hear ya! Also, those older riveted aluminum boats were pretty light too, especially compared to today's thicker skinned and welded boats.

Talking about that 13p Spitfire ..... funny you mentioned that exact prop ...... I got a 13p Spitfire 4 blade in my Xpress just as my 'heavy duck hunting load prop'.

I tend to run my Trophy Sport when I know I'm in clean water ....... not going to hit it on anything.
I run the Vengenace when I'm in rivers and/or areas I'm not familiar with (aka 'might hit something').
I run that 4 blade Spitfire when I know I run a decent chance of hitting something (trashy river or duck hunting).

I've threatened to get a Jet. Never had one, never been in one ....... but for some reason fascinated by them. I just think I need a bigger motor instead of converting the 3 cylinder Merc. I think I want to hit 60hp Jet at least ...... so would need like a 90. (sorry I'm getting side tracked)

I may buy a 23P Spitfire for a spare on my boat... I'd rather have more pitch, But that is the biggest made.... 14 x 23P
