Motor planes out great and runs smoothly until 4800 rmps.then it starts to miss bad and won't go any higher or faster. Thoughts?

Inspected spark plugs and wires? What spark plugs are you running?

    The ones you recommend.
Plugs are new. I'll check the wires.
Could they break down at high rpm?

I would recommend NGK: BPZ8HS-10. That's the ONLY approved plug, and must be gapped to .040".

Plugs, wires or coils can easily break down at high RPM's (as can other ignition system components).

Thanks Don, that is the plugs I have.
Replacement wires is easy. Is there a way the test coils?

Yes- tests are outlined in the Mercury Service Manual.

Was this occurring prior to the spark plugs being changed?
