They are supposed to be greased. If you are worried about pedestrians put a large doll head over it. It freaks some people out though.

I used to grease my hitch ball until I found out about Greaseless Hardballs. Google it. Lots of companies sell them. Top of ball is a hard nylon material that eliminates the need for grease.

I tried it one summer with a new ball and tongue and found that I actually got more wear on the ball than without grease, so I went back to not using any.

I always wipe a thin coat on mine with a paper towel. In IL we are required to remove them when not using. 50 percent of the time I grab the ball to remove and have grease on my hand.

Spray mine with Silicon spray as I hook it up and have a tennis ball with a hole cut in it for when no trailer attached. Paint a smiley face on the tennis ball with a Sharpie and it looks neat.

    Bill never made it.

I grease mine and put a cap on it when not in use. I only install the hitch if I need it.

I grease mine, I have a B&W hitch with the 8" drop in it and they are too expensive to tempt someone into stealing so I remove it after each trip.

Never have and have never had any issues either. I have an alumastinger and my hitch is in all the time. Grease is too messy and and i dont want any covers on mine.

I do. Stainless 2" and 2 5/16" balls on 8 inch drop hitch for my Ram 3500 SRW. I do not like noise from trailers while turning. Everyone has their own preferences.

I usually grease mine 2 times a year, during the off season I clean off all the old grease & start w/ new grease each year.

I just think, metal to metal, there is going to be wear, you wont see it, but there has to be wear on the ball & the trailer coupler.

Without grease, there definitely would be more wear than with the grease.

I do not. My opinion is that the grit that the grease holds cancels out any benefit it would have. Put on a nitrile glove and feel the grease to see for yourself. Maybe if you never haul on rural roads it might stay cleaner, but mine felt like it was full of sand so I quit.

I do grease the ball on my gooseneck hitch. It carries a lot more weight and the ball is fairly protected in the bed of the truck.

WTF? Someone passed a law about leaving a hitch on a truck That should start a revolution.

Beat me to it. Grease attracts dirt. Might as well line the hitch with a piece of sand paper.
