    What to fish?

45-50 degree water, not quiet muddy but heavily stained, wood and rock are the primary cover, highland lake in Eastern KY. What would you be fishing?

Personally I'd be throwing a chatterbait, spinnerbait with Colorado blades, wiggle wart, and - the wild card that most wouldn't throw but that I bet will work surprisingly well, especially if the water has been dirty for a while - a jerkbait, preferably one with rattles and painted in a bright, matte color.

A squarebill, spinnerbait and A-rig is where I would start.

It has surprised me before just how shallow the bass will get at this time of year even in cold water.

Keitechs are working around here right now in our highland lakes, and the fish can find them in stained water. 3.3 on a 1/4 oz head. Slow roll it, kill it, and let it drop, repeat. I get close to 50% of my bites on the drop.

Drew,I think you would find lots of guys in New England throwing a jerkbait in that situation. Waters in that temp range and not completely muddy I’m using a clown colored jerkbait.

    Right on!

I always hear guys talking about how you need clear water to throw a jerkbait. As you know, definitely not the case! I've absolutely whaled on them on pool 4 of the Mississippi throwing a jerkbait in 6-8 inches of visibility. Not just a cold water thing either, they'll hit it in the middle of the summer.

Largemouth. Been raining a lot here with warm nights. Water temps should be rising but a cold front tonight might hurt a little.

For me it would be a squarebill and flat-sided cranks, spinnerbait, chatterbait, followed by a jig and Neko rigged worm after they've been located.

Crankbaits. 1.5, or 1.0 or similar. They really wake bass up with warming temperatures.

Colorado blade spinnerbait and RK Crawler have been working well.
