    Sayers/Howard Draining

Does anyone know why they drain Howard lake so much each winter? The odd thing is they only drop it 5 feet until the second week of February then they drop it another 15 feet. Is this for maintenance on the dam or what? 5 feet is enough and it kills the grass every year.

    From the corps page:

The late winter drawdown allows for additional flood control storage available during the spring when the risk of flooding is at its highest. Similar drawdowns have been accomplished for the past 20 years and are part of the normal protocol for the regulation of Sayers Lake.

Pretty much every spring, we get enough water that it fills up. So, it's a good thing they draw it down.

It fills up when they decide to fill it up. We don't get enough rain to fill it 20 feet.

Looks like lake gauge is coming up now. Are they starting to fill lake back up?

I'm sure they'll keep it low until the end of April, when the major flooding is usually done.

There's no snow runoff this year so it really doesn't make sense to me. Keep in mind that this is managed by people sitting in an office in Baltimore.

It's come up quite a bit the last few days. Boats have been putting in at the winter launch. Water is muddy right now.

Tou know, there are lots of other lakes. So many, that I fish a different lake every weekend and I haven't bothered with Sayers in years.
