    Help in times of danger

    Theme: Help in times of danger (Epiphany 6).
    Another Psalm written by David under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. David knew about danger. When king Saul looked to find David and kill him--he took the whole army. David writes a short prayer for deliverance from sickness and danger. He focuses on his Savior:

    (picture David hiding in a cave from Saul)--

    Psalm 27:1-14

    A Psalm of David.

    1The LORD is my light and my salvation;
    Whom shall I fear?
    The LORD is the defense of my life;
    Whom shall I dread?
    4One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek:
    That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,
    To behold the beauty of the LORD
    And to meditate in His temple.

    5For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle;
    In the secret place of His tent He will hide me;
    He will lift me up on a rock.
    13I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD
    In the land of the living.

    14
    Wait for the LORD;
    Be strong and let your heart take courage;
    Yes, wait for the LORD.

    v1. "light".Spiritual darkness not only surrounds us, it is within us too. "Surely I was sinful from birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me." Ps 51. Don't trust the world or your own heart---trust Jesus. Foolishness vs. forgiveness only in Christ (1 Cor:2)

    v4. "beauty of the LORD". We shall see God face-to-face and not be consumed. The best part of heaven. No more being lame, no more disease, no more blindness. Even better--seeing Christ's face.

    v5. "rock"--remember the kids song about the man who built his house on the rock. It withstood the storm. We must go thru (not around) great tribulation (Psalm 23). Christ is our sure defense. God keeps us in the faith. Forgiveness of sins is a powerful thing.

    v13. The vision of Christ again. The illumination in heaven will come from the Son (not the sun). "The holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall." Ps 46.

    v14. Our restoration was earned by Christ. Trust and wait for it. It will surely come. We will have good and bad days here on earth. Christ understands--He was human. But He is all powerful God too. He defends us.

    These posts are simply Sunday's sermon reframed to the way I heard it. My pastor uses the assigned passage for the day as the outline of the sermon. He figures who better to write an outline than the Holy Spirit. Trust well placed. Those passages were assigned over 1000 years ago and written 3000+ years ago. Still relevant. We go thru each passage sentence by sentence, sometimes word for word. "Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light for my path." Ps 119:105

    This whole church year (Advent to Advent) will be spent on the Psalms--so bear with. Tough sledding.

    Lord God of Sabaoth = Lord of Armies

    The King of Aram sent a large force to capture Elisha because the prophet had been helping Israel:

    2 Kings 6:15ff

    15Now when the servant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was circling the city. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” 16So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17Then Elisha prayed and said, “O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 18When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to the LORD and said, “Strike this people with blindness, I pray.” So He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

    Hymn based on 1 Cor 15:35ff with a tip of the cap to Job.

    OK, so its not Scripture. I thought about deleting some verses to shorten the post, but its just too good...

    "Jesus Christ, My Sure Defense"

    Jesus Christ my sure Defense
    And my Savior, ever Iiveth;
    Knowing this, my confidence
    Rests upon the hope it giveth
    Though the night of death be fraught
    Still with many an anxious thought

    .
    2. Jesus, my Redeemer, lives;
    I, too, unto life shall waken.
    Endless joy my Savior gives;
    Shall my courage, then, be shaken?
    Shall I fear, or could the Head
    Rise and leave His members dead?

    3. Nay, too closely am I bound
    Unto Him by hope forever;
    Faith's strong hand the Rock hath found,
    Grasped it, and will leave it never;
    Even death now cannot part
    From its Lord the trusting heart.

    4. I am flesh and must return
    Unto dust, whence I am taken;
    But by faith I now discern
    That from death I shall awaken
    With my Savior to abide
    In His glory, at His side.

    5. Glorified, I shall anew
    With this flesh then be enshrouded;
    In this body I shall view
    God, my Lord, with eyes unclouded;
    In this flesh I then shall see
    Jesus Christ eternally.

    6. Then these eyes my Lord shall know,
    My Redeemer and my Brother;
    In His love my soul shall glow,--
    I myself, and not another!
    Then the weakness I feel here
    Shall forever disappear.

    7. They who sorrow here and moan
    There in gladness shall be reigning;
    Earthly here the seed is sown,
    There immortal life attaining.
    Here our sinful bodies die,
    Glorified to dwell on high.

    8. Then take comfort and rejoice,
    For His members Christ will cherish.
    Fear not, they will hear His voice;
    Dying, they shall never perish;
    For the very grave is stirred
    When the trumpet's blast is heard.

    9. Laugh to scorn the gloomy grave
    And at death no longer tremble;
    He, the Lord, who came to save
    Will at last His own assemble.
    They will go their Lord to meet,
    Treading death beneath their feet.

    10. Oh, then, draw away your hearts
    Now from pleasures base and hollow.
    There to share what He imparts,
    Here His footsteps ye must follow.
    Fix your hearts beyond the skies,
    Whether ye yourselves would rise.

    Sorry, but I needed the font just a tad bigger so not to squint when reading.
    Excellent read.
