    Best if used by dates.

Can you guys please explain the "best if used by" dates on food? My elderly mom swears up and down that you have to throw it out after that date! I've tried to explain to her that it's still probably
good for months, but she won't listen. She wastefully throws away alot of perfectly good food every week! I understand some things need to go, like chicken and shit. But ketchup???

The title says it all " Best IF Used By". Doesn't mean it's ruined at all although lots think so. What i like is when somebody looks at the date & wants you to try it to see if it's ruined or not & says either they don't know how to tell or they're not trying that crap.

I sold Post cereal for 10 years. The use by date was to protect the vitamin / nutrient claims on the box. Would hurt you - just didn't uphold the stated claims.

If it’s even close to the date, it’s getting chunked; because obviously we didn’t like it enough to eat it anyways.

Oh Lord... When I was a kid, my grandmothers fridge would freeze up quite often and cause the milk to clobber... She poured rurnt milk into my cereal more than once...

For instance. Last week she had some yogurt that was 2 days out and she was going to toss it. I told her it was fine and I would eat it. She said "go ahead, it'll give you the shits!" Still no shits!

"Just the facts mam". I remember reading once that the only products that are actually REQUIRED to have expiration dates are baby food. Everything else is just 'suggested' dates from manufacturers.

I was talking mostly condiments and such. But also yogurt and pickles and the like. That shit lasts forever in the refrigerator! She still wants to throw it out.

Also, she has a bottle of "sweet baby rays" bbq sauce in her pantry with a "best by" date of April 2018. I wouldn't think twice about using that shit!
