I would suggest getting a power supply or some other means of running your unit indoors. A few hours messing around in the comfort of your own home will do wonders. Put it in sim mode and go to town.

Use Google earth and easyGPS to mark spots(waypoints) and upload to your unit. Between youtube, this site and the above mentioned, you won't need much on the water training.
Units are pretty straight forward these days. And if all else fails, set it to default to just run those settings.
