    Statos 268 Update: It got a 120hp

So I have a little 268 I am redoing. I need a motor and there is a great Johnson 70hp at a good price and the 268 has OMC controls. It is rated for a 140 but the biggest I would put on it is a 115 due to a HP limit tourney trail I may do.

I don't need a speed burner but I would like to get on plane comfortably and run in the 30's. Possible?

That 70 was one solid & torquey motor right there and easy to maintain. That said, you're talking about using it in a scenario where rated hp is twice that. It sounds like you could set yourself up for disappointment & aggravation. The 115 was another solid model for the V4s - that's where I'd personally go, having experience with both.

Thanks for the input. There is actually a solid 89 Johnson 120 I looked at and would buy in a moment except for the tourney limit. There is a good 90 avail but the guy wants a little much for it. Im in a pinch because I wanna be going by mid march.

I may buy this until I find the right 115 and then see if I can get my money back. With the right prop the 70 should get the 268 on plane but it will be slow up top and I will probably have the watch the RPMs due to the pitch needed to get it up.

Sounds like you have a plan in hand so good luck on that. Too bad you can't have the 120 "detuned" to 115 to satisfy your rules.

Dad had a 70 on a little 15.5' BassChamp - kind of a trihull/pad hybrid. It seemed to run out rpm-wise with a 19" sst. No jackplate of course and he wasn't enthused with my offer to adjust the motor on the transom in order to experiment. Think I gps'd him at 37.

Just to give you some data to work from if needed or useful.

    10-4 that does help actually.

Im hooking up the boat (motor now removed) and going to see three diff motors today about 2 hours away, the best deal for now still seems to be the 70hp.

I have a lot of work to do beyond the motor on this thing but I gave $500 bucks for it. The 90 that is on it has a really bad cylinder. The carpet is garbage but the hull itself seems really solid and really clean compared to the rest of the boat. The gel coat is beyond repair so I may try to paint it. I have done few cars with decent results so why not spray the boat (cant be much worse).

She will be nicely rigged for me as a solo platform. I already had bought a HB 998 and 898 for it. Then I bought great deal on an HDS12 G3 and an LCX113 (all from right here on the BBC!!). Now what to put where?

I will do. Looks like the last thing in the bilge was a small snake (he left a skin). I went to sort the clump of wires and they were just a clump pf wires to nothing, not sure what they were there.... the bilge and aerator wiring are still in the factory wiring sleeve.

It does not look like the wiring has been messed with to bad (which can be a nightmare in older stuff as we know). Everything behind the dash looks like it is still factory wrapped.

I will need some dash stuff also...

If you put a 70 Hp motor on it , i would be looking for a 21pitch . I wouid try to stay away from aluminum props,as the first twig it touch the blades are bent, unless i get it dirt cheap .
Tempest plus or laser 11 or good props for that motor to 140 Hp range then the Laser 11 falls off?

Carpet is finally out. It was a mess as it came up in pieces with a lot of glue left. Had to use a vibrating cutting tool the clean the deck up and still have more to go.

Typical Stratos stress cracks in a lot of places on the top cap. I sanded the ones that will not be covered in carpet as flat as I could and used some fiberglass filler and them sanded that flat once it cured. I am painting the boat pink (my sister is a breast cancer survivor). The gel coat was trash on one side from being stored in the sun I guess.

I still have to clean up some silicone the last guy used on the edges of the carpet. I will eventually do a deck extension.

It always ends up being more work than thought. Weather is killing me from doing much outside but we got better weather on the way. I just need some warmth and less humidity for both paint and carpet work. I have the lids inside and am doing them. I need more clamps so I can do more than one at a time.

I may try to make a panel so I can flush mount the HBird 998C-SI in it... or it may get to be to much of a pain and I have to fish form this thing soon....lol. Definitely changing over to these Rocker switches. the old switches are mostly shot. I am trying to find a small digital 2 stroke tachometer also if anyone has ideas. I don't like what I have found.
