    Trailer plug wiring

I messed up my trailer plug and need to replace it. I bought a 5 flat plug but when I got home I see that my trailer plug has 9 wires.
The 5 flat plug I bought only has 5 wires. Ive searched all over and cant find a plug like it. Does anyone know where I can find one?

There are only 5 primary conductors on your connector. The 3 white wires are ground, 2 brown wires are for tail lights, yellow is left turn, green is right turn and the 2 red is reverse.

Is that the trailer side or the truck side ? Assuming it is the Trailer side, you can combine the Whites (GRND), and the Browns (Tail Lights, together. The Green and Yellow are turn/stop lights. The reds, I'm not sure of. Possibly used for back up and brake lockout for reverse. You can check on the truck side with a volt/ohm meter or test light to see. I'v seen a lot of trailer plugs, but not a 9 pin flat.

Look in the "Sticky Thread" section a top of page. There is a trailer wiring thread that has some very helpful wiring diagrams and yes you can use what you have. You will have to do a bit more splicing of wires.

The brown/yeLlow is Left turn signal, the brown/gReen is Right turn signal and one of the two reds go to the blue or purple wire on your back-up solenoid and the other to back-up lights if so equipped.

All the whites are ground potential, use one or more if you wish.
Don't forget to plug them in when you tow.

Thanks for everyones help. I got it wired up today. I put the 3 white with the white, 2 brown with the brown, yellow to yellow, green to green and the 2 red to the blue wire.
I tested it all with truck and trailer then soldered all connections, some dielectric grease, heat shrink and some black tape to tidy it up a bit. I restested afterwards and all works.
Im still not sure why it came with 9 wires but whatever, first time Ive ever seen 9 wires.

You might buy some Liquid Electric Tape to use on future repairs. You can paint over splices or other repairs and then when you heat the heat shrink it oozes out and seals the repaired area against water intrusion.

Sounds like you got her fixed up. As mentioned above, if you want to connect some backup lights just use 1 of the red wires. Good luck

I think it came with the extra wires to run individual runs for each ground and light wires, it’s actually a better method to insure good connections at all lights.

That isn’t correct. Brown wires are tail lights/running lights. The brown with the yellow stripe is the wire for the left side tail/running lights and the one with the green strip is the one for the right side. The turn/brake light wires are solid green and solid yellow.

I suggest you look at the illustration in post one. When you find the solid green and yellow wires, get back to me.
Per my post the mixed wires are not tail/running lights.

And I should have stated the brown wires (obviously) are running lights, both sides.

You are right, Bill. Definitely not the normal way of color coding.

Not a problem, and I always enjoy a good argument/discussion.
