Dealt with several 20-somethings today at the racetrack, another at the restaurant, and then an HVAC tech that left the house a little while ago.
All very capable, and competent. They knew how to do what they were hired to do.
Excellent work ethic and intelligence comes in all age groups. I’ve dealt with a lot of plain stupid, incompetent, lazy OLD people, 30s, 40s, and older, much more frequently than the young people that fit that description.
Clueless is clueless. It usually starts at a young age, and doesn’t improve noticeably with time.

Nothing worse than a professor's wife taking one class and actually doing the work. Let's see how she does when drinking until 2AM, banging until 4, and shuffling into class with sunglasses on cause the light hurts.

Actually just had this discussion with a neighbor going back to school to change professions. Now it's her turn to mess up the curve. Not only is she smart and motivated, but she's married and knows how to study. And to make matters worse, she's also stepping down from Ivy League to state. Kids must be hating her in class.

My youngest son cant stand the entitlement mentality of his generation. My doctors' NP is also young and said the same thing.
It is true that the kids are not ALL like that, but as a majority there is a problem.

Some stated in this thread that the parents are to blame. That is mostly true. Social media and its impact on the new generation is also an issue.
It will be interesting to see how our country adjusts and changes to this new mentality.
As I told my son, bust ass at work and you will stand out above the rest. So far that has been 100 percent true for him.
A lazy generation will allow those that have a hard work ethic to succeed.

I agree it's a lot different today, than 40 years ago. I believe the two main problems have been parents and left wing policies that changed the way our kids were taught. We use to have pride in doing the best we could and winning the prize/trophy. Today everyone gets the same thing. I am not sure it will change for the good, because we have a mind set today that everyone should get the same thing for different work ethic. This mind set of socism is going to destroy us at some point unless we at less go back somewhat to old views on somethings. The youth have not been around long enough to see what we have seen over the last 60 years and how its affect our country and younger people in a negative way. I am a Christian so I have hope for all generations but its not as strong as it once was. I wish our country all the best and everyone on here all the best our Lord and country can give you/us.

Lot of truth to this. It seems like a lot of the focus is on sports teams instead of learning how to make it in life. I’m not anti sports but it’s gotten ridiculous.

In time immortal, each generation is likely judged by the one before. Looking at the greatest generation that learned from the depression and WWII and literally built this country when they came home. I don’t think the next generation carried that torch quite as well either. Each generation has exceptions, but as a whole are gonna be OK. I guess if you look out the window at the world you might see it’s changed.

And I worked at Home Depot a bit after retiring from the fire department. Many of those customers who knew more than anybody in the store returned most of what they bought a few days later since they underestimated the project. And boy did I love loading wood and concrete into the vehicle they had ‘always’ used for that purpose as well. And while I didn’t measure the demographics, all age groups were well represented.

Anybody remember the movie “Logan’s Run”?

Every generation whines about the one coming up behind them. Get over it.

Fun fact, in the 70s the median cost of a house was $17,000 dollars. The median household income was $8,734 per year. So a house was only about twice a year's gross salary. In the 80s, $47,200 median cost of a house. $17,710 median yearly salary.

In 2010? $221,800 median cost of a house. Median income is $49,445. Buying a house in these times is much harder than it used to be. You used be able to work a blue collar job, support a family with the wife not working, and live well. Try doing that nowadays. It's not possible. Housing prices have greatly risen, but salaries have been stagnant. Of course there are other factors too that make it harder for younger folks, but these numbers should be enough to highlight my point.

So any boomer claiming that the younger generation has it easy, that they're ENTITLED, can **** off. Boomers lived in a great time, benefiting from the WWII generation, and by dumb luck cashing out at the right time. Hey good for you old farts, but don't talk down to us younger folk trying to make it with the shitty cards you dealt us. I'm a 27 year old millennial and I'm proud of it. I'm proud to be trying to make my way in a time where billion dollar corporations are seen as more important than humans. If anyone wants to know where the money went, we can thank the boomers for that one.

Except truly qualified people, I am 48 now but when I was in my 20s worked as a carpenter for several years. A Home Depot opened in my home town in November one year, my co worker and I both applied and got brought in for interviews. Both were told they would not hire us as they knew we would leave as soon as the building market picked back up in the spring since we were so qualified.

This is what most on here are talking about. My son makes 90,000 a year driving a truck. you can make between 70-100 thousand a year in the oilfield. This kid is complaining about not being able to make enough to buy a house. That is still about two times salary to buy a house if you are willing to work. You just may have to move. You can still make it but those decisions have consequences and not being willing to move is one of those. crying about everyone else had it easier is the very problem with the youth. and speaking of math it's the same today as back in the eighties according to your math. the eighties you could make about 33,000 driving a log truck in south Arkansas, and a single wide 14 X 70 trailer was only about 20,000. A house stick built was about 50,000.

Had the occasion to share a beer with my grandson last week. The bottles were not twist off. I told my grandson to grab the "church key" out of the drawer. The look of confusion then was only exceeded when he actually tried to use it to open the bottle. Of course he then went in the family room and set up my new tv & dvd player that I was clueless on. It's all relative. We know what we're taught.

Don’t forget, the OP’s experience going back to college when he was 39. He outworked all the kids coming out of high school. Now he’s 67, and kids can’t count bricks. So according to him we haven’t had a hard-working person born in 28 years? Panic! We’re screwed!
