Damn, that's crazy prescriptions cost that much. I'm glad I've got TRICARE...it's not the best but I've got few complaints.

I worked in surgery for 42 years before I retired. Many of the drugs we used cost only pennies and now they cost hundreds.

You talk about crazy prices, one drug my wife is taking is $17,000 for a 1 month supply. She was taking an oral chemo pill that was $50,000 for a months supply. Of course this is nothing compared to nuclear medicine. She had an embolization last year where the doc nuked a tumor in her liver. The operation and medication bill was $175,000. I'm thankful that my wife has exceptional insurance.

Heres what likely happened. Drug companies have figured out that most health plans provide a financial incentive to employees to select a generic drug. The generic drug companies (sometimes subsidiaries of the large company that makes the name brand version) decides to manufacture the generic drug and charge a higher price than the original name brand version. So, just because a drug is labeled generic it may actually be more expensive. Insurance companies have figured out this trick so they compare the name brand price, less the rebate they get on the back end (i.e. the net price) to the generic and they only cover the lowest option.

There are a lot of reasons. Some gouging, potential high cost of develop, raw material, the plants where the drugs are made and the strigent requirements, then lawyers suing and a company pays $100's of millions out, government is doing the same thing to the drug companies as the lawyers.

As we accept undocumented, we also accept they are not insured, we can not turn away an individual for lack of ability to pay. Others have to assume the costs.

I honestly cant answer that question because I refuse to go to the doctor because it cost me $10,000. I did use it one time 2 years ago ER visit ran a stick into my eye don't remember exact cost out of my pocket but it was expensive. My old plan I never seen a bill once I hit the $1000 deduct other than co pays.

I've worked in the medical field for 35 years....still working in it....the "nuke" you speak of is YTTRIUM 90..(I'm a nuclear medicine tech) it targets tumors in the liver. One of the problems I see in the medical field is mostly from the doctors ordering exams that are not needed....many of them will order 3 or 4 exams all at once instead of waiting to see if the first exam is positive and no need to perform the others. We routinely keep patients beyond their "approved length of stay" because the doctors have no skin in the game...they don't care if the hospital loses money....if you could take those losses out of the doctors pockets, they would not leave patients in the hospital for days "because the family is not ready for them to come home or the patient doesn't have a ride home today!" All those extra unnecessary costs are passed on in increased medical costs. A lot of doctors don't practice actual medicine anymore....they practice ordering tests (many not needed) and wait to see if any come back positive and then pass the patient to a "specialist." We have residents (soon to be doctors) in our hospital who literally use a "cheat sheet" and it tells them what exams to order based on the patients complaints...not from actually examining the patient. Anyway, I could go on and on about waste but have conceded the fact that it will likely never change...until I retire soon and spend my days at the camp on Toledo Bend!

My family of 4 coverage was ~800 per month before the Unaffordable Care Act. It nearly doubled under that horrible healthcare mandated program. I could have saved up a lot coin to pay cash for a new rig!!
