Do I need a trolling motor plug?

I am upgrading the wiring on my old tin boat to 6 gauge to go with a fortrex. I am putting in a 60 amp minn kota fuse box at the battery. Do I need to use a trolling motor plug? I have a small hole at the bow where the wires will go from the TM into the boat.

You don’t have to have or need a plug if you have a means to cut power to the motor at the battery. You can use a breaker/switch at the battery.I always hard wire mine because the brackish water down here eats up the plugs, that might not be a problem where you are.

I don't like plugs. Increases risk of meltdown at connection when running hard for long periods. What Ripbass said. I have a "resettable" breaker to cut power when charging. Mr. Jones has said that motherboard can fry an a MK if you don't cut power when charging

Never heard that the motherboard could get damaged while charging batteries.

I used a circuit breaker on the side and ran the wiring underneath the deck. No cables on my deck now. Very clean.

There isn't an off/on switch on the MK breaker. If you read your owner's manual it specifically says to unplug when charging.
I went with one of these beside my charger plug and hooked my motor direct.

I used a switched 60amp breaker at the back and a terminal block up front similar to the one posted above. I figure the terminal block makes it easier to remove the motor if it evers needs to come off for some reason without cutting wires.

What ever you select do not use the typical tin boat cheap plug that fits flush with the female portion on the bulkhead. It will get water in it and corrode, and the corrosion will either eat the pins or drain the batteries when it gets old.

This one ain't cheap but it is heavy duty. There are other good ones, someone will post one.

In my boat, it is under the front deck. The 10 gage wires from the trolling motor pass through a hole in the foot pedal tray and connects to the 6 gage wires from the batteries inside this connector box.
