If you don't have a battery cutoff switch already installed, I believe Minn Kota advises having power disconnected to the trolling motor while charging your batteries.
I always just put the cut off on the positive side
Only one needs to be disconnected, and most put the cut off switch on the pos wire. I put mine on the pos also

That's what I use to protect myself TM. I also disconnect my electronics. With the HB,collector system, I just pull it out. At least until I come up with a better solution.
