    Sound deadening in basement

What is the best way to add a little sound deadening to our basement ceiling so you don't hear everything upstairs? Our storage room/workout area is directly below my daughter's room and my wife's office. We often work out when my daughter goes to sleep or my wife is working in her office. She said you can hear everything upstairs. Treadmill, music, weights clanging around, etc. What is the easiest/cheapest way to absorb some of that sound? Can I just put some insulation up, or is there special sound deadening that will work better?

We insulated every wall and in between floors at the house for sound-deadening when we built, and it really does make a huge difference. When I was growing up, my parents used a soft tile suspended ceiling with insulation above it that worked quite well.

Is there a suspended ceiling in the downstairs room, with acoustic tile? If not, that's where to start.

After that, fiberglass insulation on top of that will help.

There is special insulation made just for sound... I'd consider this over regular insulation.

I just insulated my basement ceiling, hardwood floors above. I used 5/8" rock and Bat fiberglass insulation. It worked great, not sure how to rate the improvement but It went from being able to hear people talking to now having to yell loud to hear them. This was by far my least expensive option. I contemplated 2 layers of sheet rock with Green glue between layers (considered to be the best means of insulating, but I have lower ceilings and just didn't wan to loose anymore height down there.

Make sure your wife knows how to put on lotion on the skin or she gets the hose again.

Insulate, drywall and rubber floor mats.

On the insulation rock wool has a higher density but imho for the price and floor joist cavity I would install an unfaced R30 batt. It's all about filling the void so the r30 will do better in this scenario and make sure to not leave any gaps.

If money isn't an issue you can put MLV(mass loaded vinyl) on ceiling then drywall.

Insulate with the Rockwool as noted above and install Dietrich metal STC furring strips to receive the gyp board. The strips have rubber silencers and it will cut noise transfer through joists. It will be quiet!

Did a basement inlaw apartment at my daughter's couple years ago. She had 2x8 joists so I used 2 layers of rock wool and a half layer of regular insulation to sound proof. Then you use a sound deterring metal strip to attach your sheet rock or an acoustic ceiling. All available at Lowe's or HD.
