    G Loomis JWR - 3 or 4 power?

    Hi BBC Members,

I am looking for an ultra-sensitive jig rod so I'm considering either a G Loomis NRX or GLX (undecided which one, but I'm assuming they are similar in power and action). This rod will be used only for jigs, splitting time between 1/2 oz. and 3/8 oz. jigs. For this application, would a 853 or an 854 JWR be more appropriate?

Thanks for your insight and advice!

854 would be best I feel in that weight range.

Everyone feels a little different. For me, I use a NRX 853 for plastics/light t rigs and a NRX 894 for jigs. Very pleased with both for those purposes.

4 power for those weights the 3 power is 1/4 oz to 3/8 oz plus trailer in most people's opinion.

The NRX 873 or GLX MBR 844 would be your best bets. Both handle those ranges well.

Was never a fan of the 854 and the 853 will be taxed with a 1/2 oz jig plus trailer.

Why the 873 rod works is the rod in between the 893 and 894 in power.

The 894 is another option that would be great but it seems you might prefer rods closer to 7 feet

My thoughts exactly. Preference is the 894 for this applicaitons as I was never a fan of any of the 854's Ive owned.

Imo the 853 & 854 NRX are just not great rods for jigs and really don't care for them for anything! 894nrx or get a Glx 844

I agree with this. I really didnt like the 854. The 873 would handle those weights great but if you think you might ever step up and throw a 3/4 jig get the 894. Its the best 1/2 jig rod ive ever held that can also handle the 3/8 and a 3/4
They aint got hands, set the hook

    894 is way overkill. 854 for 1/2 853 0r 873 for 3/8. Dan

854 or 894. However, take a look at the Shimano G Loomis 904C. I prefer it to either.

Nrx 873crr is perfect for up to 1/2 jigs great tip and backbone. I feel it's a little under powered for a 3/4 jig, that's when I go to the 894, it's my favorite for 3/4 jigs, big worms ect... it can handle a 1/2oz as well just a little more stiff than the 873crr.

I think the line you fish should be the deciding factor. For some lakes in Kentucky, I would never want to go above 12# FC line. In this case, I'd pick up the three power. I have fished extensively the 803 and 893's. Where I now fish 99% of the time is south florida and I'd pick up the 894 almost always. I will note that the 893's length makes it more acceptable in Florida vs the 803 or 853.

This is a matter of preference and our preferences are in large part about where and how we fish. You are talking to a national audience

I love my GLX 854 for 1/2 ounce jigs and it works well for 3/8 ounce. Very light and very sensitive.

I would use a 873 if only going to 1/2 but still want to throw a 3/8. If it was only 1/2 and a chance to throw heavier it would be 894 all day. These are NRX numbers as I dont have a GLX to compare them to.
