    Jobwise how flexible are you?

Physically I'm like a 2x4, I need to stretch. The How's your industry doing thread got me thinking. If my field of work went way down hill, what would or could I do. I can't think of anything I'd rather do for a living. I'm 41, and have done what I do from the start. In 2008 timber crashed, That is when I retired early from the logging world. Sawmills closed, markets sucked, but I survived. I made do with my forestry consulting business and kept afloat.

Reading the posts about certain industries, I noticed many ingrained in their fields 20 to 30+ years. Just curious if others are flexible and could move on ?

I presently have a little over 4 years at my present job.. have had two other companies come at me to see if I was interested in moving... so if anything should ever happen to my present job, I would have backup... otherwise I have no plans on moving on.. I don't have a college degree and in 2019 made more $$$ than either of my parents ever had and my mom has a Masters degree.. granted a teaching Masters.. but still a Masters

Wouldn’t trade my job for any other. Love it. I retire in 2 1/2 years and haven’t really decided what’s next. I’d like a BS job, no weekends, and no real responsibilities if one of those exists

I was a procurement forester for 12 years until I left company in mid 2007. Reason? Insurance went up so much I went backwards in pay for last 3 years I was there. FF to 2008 and I took a job in purchasing in automotive mfg, have been an asset manager (purchasing) and am now procurement mgr for a fortune 500 company on a local level. Benefits are decent and it still deals with purchasing/procurement. I will be in this type of work until I retire. All I have ever known.

I miss the timber industry bad. But, I still consult a few along that call me wanting advice on selling or management. So, I still keep my hands in the business.

I work in manufacturing, been in this line of work since I was 25, I'm 61 now and been with my current employer for 31 years. That being said I have thought a lot about retirement and I know I will never not have something to do...as long as health holds out anyway. I am flexible, I know old cars, house remodeling and some landscaping. My jobs early in life taught me electrics, plumbing, building and some HVAC (knew it well in the 80's not so much now). I have very limited education, GED and a master degree from SoHK. I also have been approached by a couple other companies but not anywhere the money I get now but...it's a backup plan. Just finished one remodel and another starting soon so I would say yes I am flexible but nowhere near the physical ability to go like I did a few years back. That would be my limiter.

I could and have pursued other fields. My old job was a rough, people (including managers) and a money pool going on betting when I’d quit because of my supervisors. I stayed for over 3years before I had another firm who was their biggest competitor offer me a higher position for more money and more room for promotions, and only an hour from my house rather than the 1.5hrs that I was doing currently. It was a no brainer.

Only way I’d leave now is for a company that is closer to home, the 2hr daily drive isn’t bad but it’s a pain nonetheless. I’ve also graduated college 6yrs ago so still young in the full time working world

During the time I was at my old company, I applied to be a state forest ranger, game warden/ECON officer, construction inspection companies and logging companies. I had a few offers but all offered less money with longer commutes.

Business is always good with us. Lots of people getting sick, injured or having fires and accidents. As long as I stay out of trouble, keep doing my job and try to continue to improve I will have a job till I am ready to step away. Pretty comfortable with my abilities and job knowledge at this point in my career. Occasionally see some stuff that I have to think outside the box on but all in all I love it. . Been riding up a class for the past year and so far so good. Hopefully if I play my cards right I will promote the end of this year and retire in about 3 more years.

I'm a survivor. Get bored easy. 8 different trades starting in 79. Learned early on to look for bubbles in a trade and ride them out. I entered every trade with the thought that I would work it till I retired. Life happens and you sometimes have to start over. Only one trade and company that I regret not sticking it out at. Would have had a more stable income and the company which was the best in the state in 89 still maintains that position 30 years later.

61 now and I've only had two different jobs my entire adult life. Don't know if I have many additional skills I could transfer into a job.

My job offered me the ability to work part time instead of retiring fully. I considered it thinking I could make 25.00 an hour for 3 days a week....or work some piddling job for 10.00 an hour.....I like what I do so I took it. Easy 3 day work week and fishing $$$ and I can still fish during the week or on weekends with friends or grandkids....

Flexible enough that I could shutdown and get another job somewhere else if needed. Some days it feels like it is needed.

I must be multi talented! Wife has me doing any and everything. I’m a carpenter/mechanic/electrician/yard maintenance man/part time chiropractor/baby sitter/dog walker/brick mason/cook/vacuum cleaner operator and repair man/laundry expert/and appliance repair man. Could be anything that pops into her head. Doesn’t seem to be a need for a orgasm specialist anymore! Retirement can be hard work! The only thing I do for actual pay is investigation and research for a lawyer buddy of mine. He’s a close friend and I still don’t totally trust him. He is a lawyer so there is that.

I'm in construction sales currently for a Nationwide corporation and cannot wait to get out of it. I've been doing it for 22 years, and the boom and bust cycles on commission based pay, along with the revolving door of managers at all levels, have me worn out. I've been very successful at it with 2018/2019 being my best years income wise ever. That said, I have been on the hunt for something completely different the last year. Fully ready to take a significant pay cut and start over in a different field. I have been preparing to leave for several years paying off debt, ect. Can't wait, exciting times!

I wear myself out too much sitting behind a desk, going to meetings, processing and providing information, writing policy, as well as being a senior leader in my organization, its very tough. Constantly under the gun to provide quick, accurate responses for RFI's (requests for info) from region and other organizations. Come home, all I want is to decompress a little with the family then hit the shop for some wood or metal work projects. Week days, I get up to go pee around 3am and can't go back to sleep so I end up going for a 45 minute run, then nap on the floor for a few hours, shower and head into work before the family is ever up.

20 years of it, I can't see myself doing anything else. Its rewarding, but often wonder how would it be to take a knee and try something different.
