The lake is still at winter pool. Be extremely careful outside the buoys.
About 4-5 miles upstream from Cottonport (the first straight section of river you come to) can be great for smallmouth on the east bank. Throw crankbaits around the numerous blowdowns.
If there is no current .... go downstream. The current plays a vital role in the fishing from Cottonport on up the river. No current=no bites.
