For all the people recommending Lews I feel like you guys haven't fished with them a ton. My first few Lews were higher end and really nice reels. Every one I have bough since then has turned to trash after a season on them. The models I bought were all in the $125-200 range.

I haven't had that issue with mine, have 7 tatula's of various models.

I do have two reels that want to spool up line on one side at times, haven't figured out why yet. Don't do it all the time though, and didn't do it until about 2 years in. All of them are going to get a good cleaning fairly soon.

If it is new out of a box, I'd be sending daiwa a email and asking, from what I've seen they are pretty good about taking care of a customer.

Getting fed up with my Ci4's. Grind out of the box. Old Ci4's are smoother than the brand new ones.

    Bail arm bearings are crap.

It seems like all brands regardless of the model price range are not lasting long term. I am experiencing the same thing with my Lews reels.
I have some that are old and still smooth. My latest in the 200.00 range are already getting rough. Disappointed to say the least.
It seems the quality has gone down on all brands. Interesting to say the least.

I've used Shimano since the early 80's. My last Shimano Chronarcs were 15+ years old and quite worn. It was time to replace. I looked at the Chronarch and it felt like the others I've owned. I also looked at the Lew's Pro Magnesium and it felt very nice. Both the Shimano and the Lew's were the same price. I opted for the Lew's (2 of them) just to try something other than Shimano. I got one year on my Lew's and they felt like my 15 year old worn out Chronarchs. Very disappointed. But hey, now I know.

Do you guys having trouble with your Lew's reels ever cleaned and oiled and greased them? I have 3 of the $99 ones and have not had any problems out of them, I clean and oil them ever winter.

Roughest reel out of the box was 1 Revo STX I bought a few years back. Didn’t bother to open it up. Sent it back and AG sent me new one which was a smooth a butter.
Smoothest reels out of the box have been the 2 Lew’s Super Duty G reels, and my older (2012) Pflueger Patriach reels. They’re all still super smooth on cast/retrieve with the stock bearings.

I buy every reel in person.....take them out and spin them. Some are definitely better than others.

I just added grease (Super Lube), and oil (Yellow RF) to mine this Winter. They weren’t (unfortunately) used enough to need cleaning. I’ve yet to have a single issue with a Lew’s reel if I keep it cleaned and lubed.

I lube and oil my reels. I have 18 rods. All Lews reels. Most are all still very smooth. It was my newest (a year old) that became rough. two of them. One smoothed out a bit after the last oil and lube. The other is sill rough. I believe it may be the pinion gear.

I've got one that also does this. Don't have a clue why.

I ordered a SV from Gary not too long ago and when you reel slowly you can feel that there is a mesh problem with the gears in one particular spot. I love the reel, not too worried about it, but sending it back means I’m not using it!

All of my reels are either Daiwa or BPS and the SV is the only one that has that little hitch in it. It performs great when hooked to a fish though so no worries!

I do this with every reel I purchase, regardless of brand/type... More often than not, way too much goo from the factory.

I have reels from $299 down in price. All different brands. For the money, I am super impressed with the Limited edition pro qualifier 2 reels I got new for $50. I have been exclusively using them jerkbait fishing I believe better than 8 months now. And have boated high numbers of bass with them. Yesterday I could only get bass on jerkbaits. So I was using 2 of them regularly, and it got me thinking. I got 13 yesterday, with biggest over 22". And those reels have just been plain awesome.

I have 7 tatulas, 4 are the SV, 1 CT type R, 1 CT and one original. They all were nice and smooth at first but now all of them sound geary (except for the original) even after a good cleaning. All my Lews reel are the same too (very geary). All of My Shimanos, Steez and Zillions are still smooth and quiet

That's odd I have the same tatula and it's a great reel, zero issues. I also have about 4 curados, bullet proof. Had them for about 12 -15 years. Just some regular maintenance and they good to go every time.

After having all my reels Super Tuned (gears polished) by Bassman13 I haven’t had any issues with them being rough. Clean, grease, and oil as needed. Smooth as butta. Revo STX and Premiers, Lew’s Super Duty, Pflueger Patriarchs (Titanium model).
