I was in exactly the same situation. I bought a freshly rebuild 2006 3.3 HPDI in 2009. It ran great for 6 years then blew. Both times it was a locator pin failure with the Yamaha pistons. I decided to rebuild using Hydro Tech after talking to them. They used different pistons which they said have been very reliable. I think they are WSM pistons. I removed and shipped the fully dressed power head to Hydro Tec. The whole process went great and the cost was a fraction of a new. I'm very happy after 5 years.

IF you like your boat and plan to keep it, buy a new or used motor. I had a 2007 HPDI. It blew, had it rebuilt. It blew. I have put new electronics and power poles on my boat. And a new 2019 SHO. I figured I am still way under the $77k it would cost me for a new Ranger. IF you plan on selling your boat at some point in the near future, do not buy a new motor. You won't get your money back. I loved my boat and I do not feel like the ride of newer Rangers are better than some of the older motors. Good luck
