That is the way to test for air in the fuel line. Did you rebuild the VST and a new diaphragm in the VST air pump? Does pushing the key in still keep it running? Ask the shop to check for voltage at the primer solenoid, motor not running, key in the on position. You should not have any, if any voltage present, bad ignition switch. This causes the primer to inject some fuel, depending on the amount of voltage. The motor would smoke and die out at idle. We didn't try that. In your picture's, are those black gaskets on the carb bowls?

Sorry for the delayed response. I had a family matter. Yes I did rebuild the VST and a new diaphragm, even tho the old one looked new. I have not checked since I got it back but the last time I tried it, pushing the key in would not keep it running. I do have a new ignition switch. I installed that months ago. But I can check the voltage. They are a brown gasket on the carb bowls.

So it's been a while since I posted an update. Death in the family. But I have had time to finally work on it. I got it running, has a hiccup when idling.

I ended up checking fuel pressure and all seemed great. I found a wire coming from the key switch that was frayed so I replaced it. I ended up replacing the anti syphon valve and it started running better.

So I took it the water and acts like it's running lean at idle. If you give it throttle to fast it will shut off. But once it gets on plane, I can get it to run at 5000 rpms. Won't go higher.

I adjusted the idle screw out to 6 1/2 turns and still about the same. I'm thinking an air leak in a fuel line somewhere. But I have a new lines.

Good thing is that the boat is running. But now just need to work out the small stuff to get it running great

The wrong size fittings for the hose and using worm clamps, can cause air to be drawn into the fuel lines but no fuel will leak out. The manual will show you how to check for air in the lines. I once fought a bad and sometimes no idle on a new boat we sold. Traced it down to the primer bulb with factory clamps.

Zip ties #0320107 they have a curved face to prevent air gaps.

I was also informed when I took the boat out that it may be getting to much oil because it smokes a lot at idle. Does that seem possible?

Yes, if you are running the VRO, air in the fuel line causes the VRO to pump more oil.

Would you recommend replacing the vro now or wait till it goes out. I like the vro and I have read that it's so much better than Mercury style pump and that the vro that's on my motor just gets a bad rep. But I also want to keep this motor running a long time

I would keep it myself....usually if they do fail it will be to the over oiling side....

Okay, great. Its better to over oil than not enough. Its over oiling now but I believe I have a small air leak; as 316jughead stated. Waiting for new clamps to come in.

Hopefully after I fix that, I will have a better top end and idle better.

Been a long process but I have learned a lot about this motor, thanks to everyone up here

All the VRO failures I have seen, have been pumping no oil or pumping no fuel. Over oiling is sure a possibility.

Do you know if the VRO is the original?

I don't know if it's original or not.

Are the pumps on eBay for 150 dollars any good. Seems really cheap compared to the others
