Never ran Lowrance but I run 2 12 birds on my dash. I personally like SI and a small sliver of DI on one unit and mapping and a small sliver of sonar on the other unit. I feel like you would get a better picture with 2 12’s instead of just one 16. But it all depends what you like to run on your screen(s) while you’re at the console. I also fish mostly smallmouth on big water and am very particular on pin pointing spots before I fish them. But my preference would be 2 12’s over 1 16. Price wise it is probably cheaper to go 1 16. Another thing to look at is if you’re on a trip or out on really big water and you have a unit malfunction, you can still obviously fish without them but if you have 2 units and one goes down you’re better off then having just one and it goes down.
16 at console would be my preference.
I run a carbon 16 on my console. I prefer this over the 2 12s setup. Con would be if it went out I don't really have a back up.

I don’t run Lowrance but one Helix 12 is fine for me. All I use the console unit for is navigation and side imaging.

I’m two 12’s with BBT mounts at console along with two 9’s on BBT mounts at bow. Just like the many options this gives me at any given time over just one bigger unit.
I REALLY like the option of having dual nav screens when I am running around river fisheries, especially the Delta area with winding turns and lots of cuts. One map zoomed in close and one map zoomed out with one of them providing a "sliver" of depth really make me feel more comfortable when looking for small openings or twisting routes. Your preference for heading up or north up... I use both. Duals also work well for sidescanning if you need to follow contour lines. All that said, I could also do everything on a single 16 but I feel it is not quite as flexible. Truth is there is so much good stuff compared to what we had a few years ago that you can't go wrong now. Everything I own on my boat does it's job better than I do mine.

I’d love a 16”, but not way I could see over that big sucker!
Hmmm, why not 2 16"? lol
Twin 12's can look overwhelming compared to a single 16 but a single 16 may be too tall. It really depends upon your boat and console configuration. Is there a power consumption savings to running a single 16 vs dual 12's?
My preference is for a single unit centered with a smaller unit on a swing arm that can be removed when not needed.

Run a 16" on my setup.
What an awful problem to have.

Two 12's for sure. Gives you more versatility.
I know that two 5s are not as good as a 10. Unless the 5s know some stuff.
