Forgot to add... Shelby's buck was even more special because of the rifle...

Like many of you, I have a few of my Dad's firearms, left to me after he passed in 2002. Among them is his old coyote rifle, a Remington 700 ADL in .243 Win. As my son, Bryce, got old enough to begin deer hunting, I added a youth stock and detachable bi-pod to the rifle. Range sessions proved that he was ready and, long story short, his big opportunity finally presented itself on January 8th, 2005 when he was just 8 years old. He's 23 now... Man, the time flies!

Sitting in my lap at the base of a huge cottonwood tree with the Mississippi River as a backdrop, Bryce killed his first buck (which was also his first deer) at 25 yards with his Pawpaw's rifle...

My brother, Rob (Shelby's Dad), was nearby that day. In fact, he had seen the buck travel through that particular bottom a few times and decided that it would be a great deer for one of our kids. He showed us the area when we walked in and then left to go hunt another spot. He didn't even make it to his stand before Bryce shot... Our hunt, from the time we were settled and ready, lasted a total of 13 minutes... Thanks, Uncle Rob!

Between the way everything came together in experiencing my son's first deer with him and sharing that time with my best friend in the world (Rob), it was a pretty emotional afternoon... I can't help but believe Dad was enjoying the proceedings right alongside us.

That old Remington accounted for several more deer in Bryce's hands (here's one when he was 13)...

...and now it's been there for Shelby's buck.

Gotta believe PawPaw Rex was smiling down again on Sunday afternoon.
