    Question Trolling Motor

I'm going to be purchasing a new TM shortly for my 196 Elite. I am currently running a MotorGuide Tour Edition 109 with a 48" shaft. Looking at either a MK Ultrex or MG Xi5 and was wondering what shaft length I would need to buy, as it appears the heads on them sit-up higher? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Bruce

Hey Bruce, had an Ultrex installed on my 03, 196 earlier this year. The installer recommended a 52" shaft, which has worked out really well for me. This T/M is great. Believe me I know it's a lot of $$ but well worth it my opinion and yes, it sits taller and of course with a 52" its going to stick out from the gunwale a little. Don't know if you have an original fitted cover for the M/G, but mine fits well, as long as I take off the windshields.

52" so it's not coming out of the water in wind/waves.

I just installed an Ultrex on my 196 this year and I went with the 52".

It does stick up a little taller than I'd like (like 5 inches or so) and yes, I've smacked it while roll casting a chatterbait or something, but when it's windy, I'm VERY glad I went with the longer one.

Check MinnKota’s website. They have specific guidance on how and what to measure to determine the right shaft length. I just installed an Ultrex on my 186 and I love it!
