Is there a break-in period on the E-Tec's?

From the G2 service manual, Evinrude E-TEC requires no break in.

I don't think I'd "hammer" on it at first, but after it's got a couple hours on it, drive it like you stole it!

Evinrude has been selling new motors with the statement of "no break in period" for several years. If you chose to start the motor and drop the hammer then its your choice. I took the advice of a well respected tech here on BBC. His comment are ..."there might not be a break in period but its best to let the parts get to know each other before running them wide open all the time"

My understanding is they do the same as there snowmobile motors. They have a set number of hours generally between 4-10 hrs that the motor will run with extra oil being added. So just run the motor, don't baby it and don't beat on it. Vary your rpms on a long run and just enjoy it.

The dealer sets the EMM to break in mode, the EMM does the rest.

As for adding extra oil for a set amount of time its my understanding this only happens when the motor is over a certain rpm. I can't recall the exact number but I will use this as an example. If it adds extra oil for 5 hours and only adds extra oil when over 2500 rpm it might take 10 or more hours of run time to get 5 hours over 2500 rpm if you have a lot of idle time. I know when I looked at my engine report I had way more time below 1000 rpm that what I thought I would have. With it only adding extra oil above certain rpms it will take a longer overall run time because you are not adding extra oil at idle.

I was told "drive it like you stole it..."
Just keep an eye on the 2S oil because it will use more during it's programmed break-in mode....

    UPDATE:

Got the boat out yesterday for a two hour break-in period and to say I'm impressed with the G2 would be an understatement! Torque and mid-range punch are unreal!
