    920 pro test, results

    2019 920 ProXP 250 Merc ProXS 4s.

My thoughts, the 26p fury seems jacked up, it’s numbers are way off from the 24p and 25p. I bought the 26p used and have no info on it. With the lithium batteries removing about 175 lbs from the boat I think I should be running 79-81 mph.

I have to trim the max amount and still don’t seem to get great lift, my theory is the removal of weight from the back (batteries) has the boat lighter but out of balance. Do most guys running a 920 need max trim for best top end speed?

Thinking about trying a 26p tempest which is supposed to lift better that a fury.

what prop to pad are most guys finding best on the 920?

    Weather-

    Air temp: 62
    Water temp: 61
    Surface conditions: smooth

    Boat conditions
    Fuel: 2/3
    Livewell: empty
    Gear: tournament
    Driver: 178 lbs
    Lithium batteries: 85 lbs total.

the (#) is the Atlas setting that goes with said pad height on my boat.
Slip calculation using Mercury App, and 1.75 gear ratio, which I think is right but some of those numbers seem low.

    Fury 24p @ 3 1/2” (11) below pad:
    Time to plane: 2.6
    WOT rpm: 6150
    Top speed: 76.4
    Slip: 4.33%

    Fury 24p @ 3 1/4” (12) below pad:
    Time to plane: 2.7
    WOT rpm: 6175
    Top speed: 76.3
    Slip: 4.84%

    Fury 24p @ 3” (13) below pad:
    Time to plane:
    WOT rpm: 6200
    Top speed: 76.2
    Slip: 5.35%

    —————————————-

    Fury 25p @ 3 1/2 (11) below pad:
    Time to plane: 3.7
    WOT rpm: 5850
    Top speed: 76.4
    Slip: 3.44%

    Fury 25p @ 3 1/4 (12) below pad:
    Time to plane: 3.9
    WOT rpm: 5950
    Top speed: 76.7
    Slip: 4.69%

    Fury 25p @ 3” (13) below pad:
    Time to plane: 3.3
    WOT rpm: 5950
    Top speed: 75.9
    Slip: 5.69%

    —————————————-

    Fury 26p @ 3 1/4” (12) below pad:
    Time to plane: 3.5
    WOT rpm: 5900
    Top speed: 74.3
    Slip: 10.48%

    Fury 26p @ 3” (13) below pad:
    Time to plane: 3.7
    WOT rpm: 5950
    Top speed: 74.3
    Slip: 11.23%

this prop is far out of line compared to 24p and 25p.

    ————————————-

    Turbo TXP 27p @ 3 1/4” (12) below pad:
    Time to plane: 5.4 sec
    WOT rpm: 5600
    Top speed: 73.4
    Slip: 10.27%
Just ran this one because I had it, now for sale! Ran good on a Bullet, 7/10, needs a polish.

most guys I have talked too ‘ tell me when they changed to lithium batts “ put there 920’s way off balance !, they ended up moving as much weight as possible to the rear storage compartments!, also try filling just the port livewell ?, these Phoenix hulls are really balance & trim sensitive, when you get it all dialed in “ they really “ Scoot “ !.....

Come on guys, need some feed back.

do most guys need max trim for best top speed in a 920? I’m coming out of a Bullet 20XD where just over half trim was the sweet spot so I am trying to figure this out.

I’m seeing prop to pad heights of 3 1/2 to 2 inches below for top speed, that is a wide range. Why is that? For me 3 1/4 - 3 1/2 inches has been best. At higher motor height I get more rpm’s but less speed, is it a lift problem?

Anyone have some numbers comparing a Fury to a Tempest+ and if the Tempest lifts better? If going from a Fury 25p should I try a Tempest 26p or a 27p for similar rpms? Tempest is larger diameter which should lift better but more of that diameter is barrel verse blade.

    thanks.

Most guys get their best numbers a couple bumps down from max trim unless it's a SHO. A tempest will really run but talking to prop guys they usually need some work. Somebody just had a post where he ran a 27 tempest and it was a runner

I have the same boat and motor as you. Your numbers are identical to mine with the Fury 24P. I run my JP on 12-13. Anything higher, I gain Rs and loose speed... Trim is 1 or 2 bumps from max as mentioned above... With this setup, it will run 75 with both live wells, two 220# anglers, full on gas and TX load... I do have dual 8' PP, dual console and HB360... I'm sure this boat will run 80+ with some testing and tweaking. My waters are small, shallow with some stump fields so I'm not willing to sacrifice hole shot for 5 mph.

I ran the 26p Tempest+ today, could not really turn it.

    time to plane: 3.8 sec
    WOT rpm: 5750
    top speed: 76.4

found a good deal on a 24p Tempest+ that I’m going to have worked for more bow lift, will take a few weeks, I’ll update.

You might consider a 25 with extra cup over a 24. The cup is what gives you lift.

Argued with my prop guy between a 24p and 25p. He was concerned that after adding a lot of cup to the 25 the rpms will drop to much. He said it was easier to add cup and pitch to the 24 to dial in the lift and rpms.

You can always turn the 24 into a 25 if worse comes to worse. I bet a 24 with a bunch of cup will really fly the hull though, she might be a handful

    Who is your prop guy?

I had similar conversation with Mark Croxton who advised that the my 25 Tempest was just a 24 with extra cup. I would think a 24 worked over for more cup would perform like a 23. I would get a second opinion.

Do you guys think the prop numbers and selection would be similar for a 20 PHX rigged the same?

Your feedback is in your data. 26p is too big of a wheel, look at your RPM's. End of story.
