I use copper wire out of an old electric motor. Lots of guys use floral wire. You can get it at big box stores. I think it is 26 ga.

Copper craft wire in 20-24 gauge is best... 22 is great but sometimes hard to find.

Go to the craft store and you can buy the green floral wire that is usually 24 gauge and it will say so on the roll. At the same store you can go over to the shelves and find Darice brand "perma-dye" wire, it is copper wire that is dyed black and runs in a lot of different sizes. I use 26 guage mostly but I would suggest you start with 22 or 24 until you develop a feel for how tight to twist the wire as 26 will break easier than 22 or 24.

I went to my local Michael's store this weekend and bought some green floral wire. 24 and 26 gauge, both spools were less than $3 each and I found a coupon on their website for 25% off my entire purchase.

Thin wire cuts silicone very easily. 20-22 gauge is much better.
