2004 VMAX HPDI 175 battery issue?

This is going to be long winded so I can explain in detail

Couple weeks ago my boat randomly was giving me starting issues. I made a long run no issues. Caught a couple fish and had the livewell going and went to start my motor and i had nothing. Livewell still running and graphs. Turned them off and waited a bit and it started up. Ok maybe my battery is going bad. Ran for a bit towards home and stopped a couple times and it started up no problem. Later in the day it did it again but this time I was trying to get on plane and it just quit. Never fired up again. I had to troll it on the trailer.

fast forward till this past Monday, boat ran fine all day. So i figured it was just a charging issue the last time. I go to launch my boy today and trims down for a second then nothing. No crank no trim. Wait a few minutes and trim works then quits. I pull the boat out and hit the trim and i hear it click but then nothing. No trim no crank!

frustrating as f&$k!! Do any of you think this is a battery issue? I have 12.92 volts right now. Cranking issue with the battery? I have a blue top and it’s a year old. Or do you think there is a short or ground issue somewhere? HELP!!!

Those batts fall short of even the min spec needed for the motor, Even when brand new...

Try this one … With clean contacts.

Do you think it’s a battery issue then? Once it’s running shouldn’t it charge the battery up? This morning it was a full charge and my bank charger says all batteries are good.

I agree with 21XDC, you should have a bigger cranking battery.

    But.......
Start at the source by cleaning your battery terminals and wire connectors,(use a file/sand paper or wire brush) Then make sure connections are tight. If that doesn't help, then clean and tighten connections at your starter .

Since you said the trim and start both failed to work, I would say more than likely it's dirty/bad battery connections.

Yes, check the + and - connections at the battery and engine first. I'd also take the battery to your local auto parts store for a quick load test which will confirm if it is the battery.

If you have the smaller group 34 (24) Optima blue, I believe it meets CCAs Yamaha specs, not sure on the MCA or RC. I would think it would be OK if it is not loaded hard (and long) when the engine is off.

In the 24/34 size, you have to really have to watch the specs on replacement batteries for a HPDI.

Group 24 and 34 should not even be considered in any bass boat...

There are many Group 24 batteries that work great and far exceed Yamaha specs. A group 31 is great but some boats are not configured or don't have room for one.

I've been using the this one for 4 years which works great:

Back to the original post..... wonder if h00l1gan figured out what was wrong?

Far exceed? That barely makes min specs.... "When the batt is brand new" A bigger battery will still fit needs after years of service while life is falling....

    Isn't this the OP issue?

I'm not a fan of bare min on anything.... Then wonder why I'm not happy/having problems.....

I was only trying to help the guy trouble shoot his starting problem, not get in a pissing match on why he needs the biggest battery. You just jump in and immediately tell him he needs a giant battery when his current setup has been working for a year. If his battery is bad, and its only a year old as he states, he can probably get a new replacement free under warranty.

Hope he figures out what the problem is.

Starting and trim issues suggests it is not related to anything in the key switch or relays. Trim typically will continue to work with very low voltage. Check battery cable connections on both ends.
