    Question Reel Spooling Opinion

Curious how many of you spool with straight Fluoro or pit some “backing” on. Braid? Mono? Cheaper Fluoro? What backing works best for you?

Casting reels I just do straight, spinning reels I do braid with a 5’-20’ leader depending on situation.

When using floro or braid I always use a backing. Those types are too expensive to completely fill a reel since you’re only using about 1/3 and the backing helps with slipping

Straight FC on my reels to begin with. Once it gets used up will add backing to get FC to edge of spool again. Backing is mono and I too use 6#.

we had a Gander Mountain open up about 8-10 years ago (closed now), but i bought a spool of 14 lb Trilene and i think its 3,000 yards, maybe more. I've never seen another one like it, but they had them on sale for $19 at the grand opening, i use it for backing on every reel i have and still am using it. its like an all you can eat buffet, I've been waiting for it to run out but it keeps going. Best money i ever spent. You will save a ton of $ by using backing and buying bulk spools, especially with flouro.

For braid I go full spool as well. I dont use leaders so going full spool then adding backing as needed will save line and $$ overall.

Curious as to how you add backing after spooling the braid?

I ońly use Fluoro as a leader. I always use old mono for a backing when I use braid.

I use leftover mono or fluoro for backing on all reels. Whatever is left at the end of a spool. Usually 20-30 yards backing attached with a Uni-knot to the primary line.

When the braid is getting low
tie on backing reel it on til full spool
    then take backing off
    take braid off
    put backing on
put braid on now back to full spool

I use a 3000rpm drill with spool attatchment makes quick work of things.

Casting reels get braid backing, then mono, copoly or FC on top. Speeds up the respooling and saves $$$.

When I need to add backing I just take one of my old empty reels and reel the braid onto it, then reel it back on.

No backing on anything. I don't like the lump on the spool that the knot causes.

I have thought about making cork, balsa, or plastic donuts to take up some of the reel capacity. Just not sure quite how to do it on my lathe. Has anybody ever manufactured such an item for sale?

I don' know if anyone on BBC has ever made those items, but years ago reel manufacturers made them and you could buy them aftermarket.
