    How fast can you run...

With the trolling motor down before you risk damage?

Are you asking about running the outboard with trolling motor down, or how fast to run the trolling motor.

personally I don't do it at all… I would think anything over an idle is for sure flirting with trouble. Maybe not now but over time its adding a lot of stress on many parts.

I am guessing the former - it is a question I have wondered about as well.

My first and second guess was the outboard.

I see people do it all the time. Trim up to keep the bow high enough to get motor out of the water . When looking for stuff I have started the engine and and put at like high idle and steered with the trolling motor. ( if your kill switch cord is long enough)

I wouldn't even suggest idling slow or fast with the trolling motor down. Too much can happen. But then again, our waters are averaging 5' depths and full of timber.

I troll all the time with my motor down up to 5mph. I have a 60" shaft and having motor down helps the bow track straight. I've been doing this for around 15yrs with no issues. I think common sense applies here. Open water only.

Big motor pushing with TM down. Open water on St Clair. I get a better sonar image from the TM than I do from my shoot thru. Just curious how fast is “safe” to cover water while scouting.

I saw someone I thought was SD doing that back in Mitchell’s. Leaning on the post upfront and motoring at a very high idle. I thought that was crazy (didn’t see any type of kill switch, but it may have been hooked up).

I’m with John a 100%. If I’m moving with the outboard, the TM will be up. You’re not up front to see that stump or rock ready to take out motor and/or shaft.

Deploy and stow the helm. With big waves as you know are tough to go up front to do either. Maybe I have missed something here but why else would you want to run with the TM still down? Bob
