Subject says "fill/drain plug". Look BEHIND the prop on the bottom inside the gear case. IE you have to remove the prop. That would be my guess not knowing what lower unit you are running. Can be a surprise if you are used to it being on the bottom quadrant of the gear case near the front...

I could be wrong but you may want to reread his question. He’s asking the torque value for the plug, not where its located.

I'm sure there's a # number somewhere but I've watched certified mechanics change fluids and all they do is thread the screw and tighten it down with a regular screwdriver... Dan

Just say n one persons hand tight may differ from yours. If you have Popeye forearms like mine will be different than Olive Oyl's.

Spoke with Mercury customer service this morning, answer is 100 inch pounds which includes the vent screw.
I have the Mercury service manual 90-8M8000017, this book does not have the gear case information in it, that I can see.

You're correct. That is because 8M8000017 (250XS Racing) Manual does not cover gearcases.

With all due respect Don, this is the manual that you suggested for me we spoke sometime back, I would've thought it had all the information for my engine/ lower unit, I believe my engine is not a 250 SX racing engine.

Rangerdic: I did go back and check, and your engine serial number actually specifies this manual (in the Parts Catalog). That being said, there is a later manual (higher serial number group) that would be a better choice for you.

Drop me an email, or give me a call and I will make arrangements to get you swapped out.

Sorry... took me a bit to put "Dic Crider" (from your profile) together with your name.

Below is the torque specification on a Gen2 Torquemaster.

    Fill Screw is 17 lb/ft
    Vent Screw is 60 lb/in.

This should be a Verado-Style gearcase on this engine, according to the Model Number.
