    Engine sounds like a diesel

    2015 175 HP Pro XS
Sounds a bit like a diesel at idle.
Underway it sounds great like a V6 should.
    Pulls hard.
    Is this normal?

You talking about the diesel rattle at idle? Not normal. Checked compressor? It is a good candidate for making a racket...

Use a stethoscope with the metal probe removed as a listing device to isolate where the noise is coming from, A piece of 1 in ID hose held to year will also work as well, just not quite as well
    Thank You Leon Pugh

Is this a new to you motor? The optis do have a diesel like growl at idle compared to traditional 2 strokes.

    Yes new to me.
So one says normal and one says it’s trouble.

I'd have your Mercury Certified mechanic check it out. The compressor is a major cause of problems with the Mercury motors. When it blows the fuel rails and injectors will need to be cleaned and re-calibrated. Better to be safe than sorry in my humble opinion...

You have the ability to take a video of it? May answer a lot more questions than just stabbing in the dark. If this is your first opti they definitely sound different.

Air compressor does have a unique sound at idle (unlike most other engines). Have a knowledgeable tech check it- and while you're at it, verify the compressor is in good condition (no bearing problems, etc).

Momentarily closing the air inlet for the compressor off (with your thumb) will eliminate the sound of the compressor for a moment (don't hold your finger there for any length of time or the engine will die).

Will fire it up and make a video next weekend when I winterize it.
    Ordering service manual as well.
Mercury Certified mechanic? There are a few dealers around here, but I'm not sure who to trust.

Try Mercury's Dealer Locator (you'll have to do it from North of the border).

I ran the motor on the muffs to get the stabilizer through it for about 1/2 hour while I washed it.
Never even thought about the sound until after.
The exhaust drowns it out so I guess it is not as loud as I thought during the test dive.
