    209 TE Setup

My fishing partner just bought a 97 209te with a 99 225 Promax. It has a 12 inch man jack plate and power tech 24p tro4 on it now. It comes out hard but I dont think it has enough wheel. Just looking for what you guys recommend as far as props and setup for prop to pad that work well. Did some research and trophy plus and bravo 1 come up alot. Thanks

I had a 97 209 single console with a 225 Promax. I don't recall the prop data; I did add a short foil on it that got it up a bit better.
These are heavy boats and once you get them on plane it should fly. Takes some seat time, try that first before you spend a lot on new equipment. m

26p Trophy. If it's the factory 12" plate - all the way up.

Do you guys find that the typical 225 efi on a mid 90's 209 can swing a 27 Tro4/trophy plus? Or is a 26 typically what they will pull?

    3.0L(ProXS) = 27p

    2.5L(ProMax) = 26p

Thanks yupitsme! Does that go for all 3.0l v6 mercs, efi or proxs? I know that the 96 225 efi on my 209 is pretty stout, bit I've heard that the later 225 efi motors 97+ were stronger. . .just trying get an idea of whether or not to buy a 27 inch tro4, as my rig was poorly propped with a 25 inch spinelli. Also don't mean to hijack the thread, can start my own if necessary. I really appreciate all the g-boat knowledge from everyone on here.

Sorta... kinna it does. On the 3.0 EFI’s most came with a fleetmaster lower unit, I think that’s what it was called. They can not be run as high as the torque master and are a handful to drive. But yeah... they’ll turn a 27p just fine on an early Gambler.

Edit: The standard EFI 3.0L gearcase was a service master....

Yupitsme, thanks again for the clarification. I guess I'm off to order a 27" Tro4.

Were pretty happy with how the tro4 performs, wish the vent holes were larger.

Is drilling the vent holes a thing to do if more venting is needed on holeshot? I know my era 3.0l(1996) is not known for bottom end torque, but I truly have zero baseline as my boat came to my with a small barrel 25inch four blade spinelli, which is totally the wrong prop and absolutely blows out something wicked on the holeshot. I suppose drilling the vent holes is particular to every rig/weight load/setup.

If you bought it new you may be able to get PowerTech to put an additional set of holes in. Orrrrr.... Mark Croxton will for sure do it. But of course if new... there goes your warranty and you have to tote the note!

Thanks, that helps, although I just pulled the trigger on a 27p Tro4. Will update when I get out and run it. Hopefully if I need to, Mark could take a touch out of it, although my 225efi feels like a beast up in the higher rpm range. We'll see, but I appreciate everyone's insight on this. It's seems some can swing a 27, others need a 26. . .so hopefully I made the right choice.

My buddy has a 97 model 209 with the 225 EFI and he's currently running my 27 Trophy at 72 GPS and RPMs at 5800. I have a 2001 Intimadator with the 225 EFI and I'm turning a 28 Razor XL4 to 5900 RPMs and 77 GPS. I also have a coned lower and hydraulic jackplate on mine and his is a manual 12" plate.

Interesting, and thanks for the feedback. I have a 12" Mercury paralift hydraulic plate, so hopefully I can get the numbers with a 27p wheel. Interesting that you're running the razor, how is your holeshot with it?
