2013 250 Etec shifting in reverse grinds at idle but shifts normal at more RPMS

I noticed this happening the last couple times out. Most of the time, like 90% while shifting from neutral to reverse I feel and hear slipping. I have to put it in neutral and elevate the RMPS a hair for reverse to work. That works every time. Any suggestions if this is a cable adjustment issue or something bigger?

Is this something one can do with basic skill and tools or should I head to a Evinrude service center this weekend?

Had the gearcase been removed prior to the grinding in reverse, perhaps to reseal or replace the water pump? If so, it may be the shift rod height adjustment was not set before installation. That has to be correct first, before adjusting the shift cable. Do not run the motor until the adjustments are checked as each time you shift, you wear and round off the clutch dog and reverse gear lugs, which eventually require expensive replacement.

Never understood that thinking,,,why not drop it off during off months and let em have it for the winter instead of everyone loading up repair facilities in the spring and then upset when it takes weeks and weeks to fix????Just me I guess..

Has the motor been sitting unused for a while just before the shifting problem? If so, corrosion might have built up on the shift rod which could limit its travel into reverse and not allow the clutch dog to fully seat against the reverse gear. That is a common problem in brackish or saltwater areas.

Not much brackish water up here in Chicago and I use the boat weekly.
