2000 Mercury 115, no beep during key on

I know the beeper works. worked with my 40hp and worked with the 1993 115hp motor.
with the 2000 115hp motor i get a constant beep with key on. tracked it down to oil tank magnet/float being bad by disconnecting sensor and hooking free hanging extra tank sensor and using a magnet. this way it works correctly. Installed into tank and same result, key on, beep on and never off unless key off.

im reading during searching that some years mercury disabled the key on beep test. if so, ok that might explain it. should i try to ground out temp sensor and see if beep works correctly? i plan on getting a new tank eventually but im just gonna run it for a few new to me trials and tests before ordering a new tank.

Is it an inline 4cyl 115? If so there is no test beep. The experts will need a serial number for verification of what motor you have.
